Day 1 Recap:
Friday, May 17, 2019
George Quintero founder of Cal Storm, Coach of Team Taurasi put on a great and organized event with the help of his son Quincy Quintero working in the background with all of the Recruiting and Schedule setup. We appreciate those two for welcoming us and accommodating us the whole time at this event. The house was full of D1 and other coaches to watch the Elite Division games, that consisted of Team Taurasi, West Coast Elite, Vegas Bulldogs, San Diego Waves, Las Vegas Storm, Top Flight Elite, Cal Storm, Arizona Premier and Nike Team North West. The competition was top notch and the games were very entertaining for the audience and the coaches on the sidelines. Hospitality Room for Coaches and Media was on point, again Top notch service by the staff. Again, thanks to the Cal Storm and Mamba Sports Academy for a gracious time in Newbury Park, CA.
Here is what we learned on Friday Night at the Mamba Sports Academy, the Vegas Bulldogs are foreal, which is mainly made up of the Centennial Las Vegas High School team beat a tough West Coast Elite by a score of 48-43, which hinged on a technical called on Jessica Peterson late in the second quarter which gave the Bulldogs 4 pts and the ball when WCE was up by 5pts at that time. Team Taurasi had a rough time with Nike Team North West, beating them with a score of 50-46. Arizona Premier beat up on Titan Select Gray with a score of 62-22; San Diego Waves edged the Cal Storm EYBL 37-34. Team Lynwood Knights defeated Cal Storm Central Platinum with a final score of 45-21.
Standouts from Friday, Day #1:
2021, 5’6, PG, West Coast Elite 17UAA, Jayda Curry was on fire in this game, she showed her whole package on this night. She made deep three pointers, got the rim with a reverse layup, floaters and short jumpers. She pulled up on a dime and knock down some mid range shots as well. She is a willing defender, but her defensive skills will need to improve for the next level.
2021, 5’9, SG, West Coast Elite 17UAA, Trinity San Antonio was solid in this game, giving her team the energy by driving to the basket, finishing thru traffic and knocking down shots off the bounce. She showed us her motor, she never stops moving and never stops attacking the opponent on the offensive side of the ball. She is also a willing defender that will dive for a ball without any hesitation.
2021, 5’10, SF, Vegas Bulldogs, Daejah Phillips was the key for her team, her energy kept the bulldogs rolling and knocked the confidence down of WCElite. Daejah scored at will, taking them to the basket, offensive rebounding and also out hustling her opponents. She showed us her toughness to the rim, showed us her midrange game and her handle thru traffic. Daejah also is a menace on the defensive side of the ball. This kid is a major take for anyone that is in need of a scorer that can get a bucket anytime you need it.
2020, 6’2, PF, Vegas Bulldogs, Aishah Brown is another monster on the board for her team, she is relentless to get the job done. She showed us that being tough is the key to being a good rebounder and blocker of shots. This kid could rebound like no other and then finish you off at the rim or hit a mid range shot off the bounce. She is skilled beyond her years, in my opinion.
2020, 5’10, SG, Top Flight Elite 17U, Erica Ingram was a hustler and a fighter on the floor, she showed us her skillset from earlier in her years. She had a decent shot from midange, she had rebounded well and she turned 50/50 balls into 100 balls for her team. Still developing young shooting guard, can get her shot off under pressure.
2022, 5’4, PG, Cal Storm EYBL, Jyah LoVett is a strong, crafty, quick point guard that demands you guard her, cause she is going to score on you. She will lull you with her change of direction, then her change of speed and then she is laying the ball up, before you can stop her. She is a coaches dream, runs the offense to her coaches liking and can get a bucket at will, no matter who is guarding her. This kid is going to be major….
Stay tuned for the kids we evaluate and highight on Day #2 Recap…….
