What we learned at the EBE Pacific Showcase at the Mamba Sports Academy in Newbury, California. Again, thanks to George Quintero and Mamba Sports Academy for the hospitality and well organized event they put on for the coaches an media. We inked a couple of deals with them to cover most of their events, we intend to follow through with that venture.
We learned that Team Taurasi (5-0) is still the King of the Hill when it comes to California Travel Club basketball, meaning they are still on top with talent and play. I have watched all of the Top Clubs in Socal and no one has come close to performing as well as they have. West Coast Elite 17UAA (2-3) needs some more continuity with the team, they are playing down to the level of talent this weekend, they went 2-3 and I have never seen that from them before. I believe they had some roster problems, some team difficulties and some games where the team just did not perform to their best. The San Diego Waves 17UAA were on their game this weekend and it showed with their play, they beat West Coast Elite in a good game as well as played Team Taurasi to the wire. They proved they are a force to reckon with, their team effort was above and beyond on this weekend, great showing from them.
We also saw a good team in Top Flight Elite Sac – Julz, they were tough, gritty and very well coached. They were a tight knit team that listened to their coach and that allowed them to be better than the other more skilled teams in the long run. Empyre was impressive, I had never heard of them before this weekend, but they were a tough, scrappy bunch of girls who have a nice way ahead of them. Costa was very interesting, they are the club team made up of Mira Costa High School, they played fundamentally sound and ran their sets to perfection to give teams a hard time over the weekend. Cal Storm Central 17U were impressive, girls were engaged and ready to play, had tough girls that went after every ball and hustled for their coach on each and every play.
These are just a few of the teams we saw this weekend, it is pretty tough to see everyone in a weekend, due to scheduling. We saw what we needed to make some adjustments to the rankings of teams as well as some new faces we had not seen before, so all in all, we enjoyed our time at this event. See you next year.
