Henry County was organized in 1834 and named for Patrick Henry – the famous Founding Father who proclaimed “give me liberty or give me death” to the Second Virginia Convention in 1775. There have been some outstanding girls basketball teams in Henry County. With the number of standout players returning in Henry County’s 4 high schools, next year should be no different.
Let’s take a look at a number of talented underclassmen from Henry County.
Shae Pedroza – 5’5 Guard – Napoleon – Class of 2020
An accurate 3-point shooter with great range, Pedroza has combo-guard ability, although she seems to feel much more natural with the ball in her hands at the 1. A good ball-handler who creates a number of scoring opportunities for her teammates, Shae will routinely defender the other team’s top guard.
There are few teams that have had success stopping Caely Ressler from Napoleon. (Photo Credit: Northwest Signal)Caely Ressler – 5’11 Guard – Napoleon – Class of 2021
Ressler is a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses. She uses her long arms and nearly 6-foot frame to beat defenders with a great first step, while also shooting the ball well from the perimeter and mixing it up on the block. Ressler grabs her fair share of rebounds and blocks a number of shots from her off-guard spot. She is a nice college prospect with size and the ability to add muscle down the road.
McKenzie Vance – 5’10 Forward – Patrick Henry – Class of 2021
Vance is a long forward who does a majority of her work around the rim. She is long and athletic – she uses that length and athleticism to rebound the basketball at a high rate. McKenzie should be a double-double candidate on a nightly basis throughout her last two years of high school.
Audrey Sonnenberg – 5’8 Guard – Patrick Henry – Class of 2020
Sonnenberg is a very good multi-sport athlete at Patrick Henry – who in addition to her exploits in the fall and spring – does a number of good things on the hardwood for the Patriots. She is a good shooter who does a solid job of handling the ball. Audrey is also money from the FT line and scores a number of her points there throughout a given game.
Justine Eis could develop into a dominant force by the time her career at Holgate is over. (Photo Credit: Northwest Signal)Justine Eis – 5’11 Post – Holgate – Class of 2022
One of the stronger posts in the area, Eis bust onto the scene and had a very successful freshmen year as one of Holgate’s top players. She has a nice set of post moves and is tough to stop when she gets her hands on the ball around the rim. Justine does a good job of carving out space and creating scoring opportunities in the paint.
Cassidy Chapa – 5’6 Guard – Liberty Center – Class of 2021
Chapa is a tremendous scorer from her off-guard spot. She is good defender on the ball and creates a number of scoring plays from steals and deflections off of the ball. Cassidy is a good shooter who also has the ability to dish out a number of assists and grab a handful of rebounds. She is comfortable finishing with both hands at the rim.
Taylor Strock – 5’8 Guard – Napoleon – Class of 2021
Taylor does a lot of things right. She comes off of screens and score the basketball from all 3 levels. She is a good 3-point shooter and has no problem getting her shot off – due to her lightning quick release. Strock has a great package of dribble moves and finishes with runners/floaters routinely. She is an active defender who gets a number of lay-ups from her own pressure.
