Prospect Spotlight: Taya Young (2021)
Iowa Prep Red 2021 is having a solid spring AAU campaign and a lot of that success can be attributed to the play of Taya Young. She is a 5’7 guard who is really starting to come into her own. Young has been shooting the ball better this summer and is making better decisions. Her ability to command the ball is really starting to show. Young is playing better and after West Branch went 15-5 this past season, they are looking like they will turn a corner this upcoming season. She scored 9.9 points a game last season on 38.6 percent shooting from the floor. With more experience her game should really start to take off this season.
“The season went really well for us for being such a young team,” Young said. “The chemistry on the court was really good because everyone wanted to play the same style of basketball. This summer is going really well. This is my first year playing with Iowa Prep, and they are such a good program. The coaching is really good because they coach with positivity and their main focus is making each player better.”
This summer there are a few things that she is focusing on to improve. Getting quicker and stronger will certainly help her game, but improving her range might be the most beneficial to her.
“I am mostly working on my defense and being able to shoot anywhere,” Young said. “Last year I really struggled with playing defense, so I hope to improve that. I am also working on my shooting because I would like to be able to shoot anywhere on the court. I have been focusing a lot on my three ball range because I’ve always struggled with that.”
Young has already had a few colleges express interest in her game. With her game showing improvement this spring and a big high school season around the corner, Young should see a bit of an uptick in college interest. She has been working hard on her game and coaches are starting to see that hard work pay off. I think that this summer is going to be a big step in her recruiting.
