First up, we have the weekend’s best shooters. These lists may include players from our top performers, but will be hard hitting on those not mentioned previously. You can find the five best shooters we saw this weekend below.
Paige Rocca — 2020 5’9 SG — Kingdom Hoops 2020 / Iowa City HS
Is it really a list of top shooters if Paige Rocca isn’t mentioned? While there were some great performances shooting the ball this weekend, I doubt anyone came close to nailing 20 plus 3-pointers like Rocca did. She has a quick release and it’s effortless. She doesn’t need much space to get it off, and while I thought she probably could have shot more, it’s her decision making that is helping her percentages. Combined with a solid ability to take the ball off the bounce, Rocca now has more open looks because defenders can’t close out like they used to. One of the top shooters in the state is becoming one of the best basketball players in the state.
Lauren Conrey — 2020 5’8 SG — Iowa Prep Red 2020 / Waterloo West HS
Like Rocca, Conrey was on the list of top ten performers this past weekend. Much of that was due to her shooting in one of the games that I saw. If I have ever seen anyone in a zone, it was Conrey on Saturday. Every shot she put up you just kind of knew it was going in the basket. She is a talented guard, one who is probably a bit under-the-radar at this point. She is a very talented shooter who doesn’t force the action at all. When she is shooting the ball in rhythm, she isn’t going to miss. Conrey shot 46 percent from behind the arc this past year in high school
Taya Young — 2021 5’7 G — Iowa Prep Red 2021 / West Branch HS
I was very pleased with how Young played this weekend. I have seen her play quite a few times this summer, and this was the best that she has shot the ball. Young is a guard who has the ability to command the ball and slow the game down. When she is in rhythm Young can really knock down shots from the outside. It is something that she has put in work on this summer, and it is evident that it is paying off. I don’t think she is going to be someone who can just nail them all game long, but when she is set and in rhythm she can knock it down. That is exactly what she did this weekend.
Dawsen Dorsey — 2022 5’9 W — Iowa Prep Red 2022 / Davenport Assumption HS
Dorsey didn’t shoot the ball this past high school season at a great rate, but this weekend she looked good shooting the ball. She was creating for herself and was able to rip off a couple mid-range jumpers in a row. I didn’t see her make a lot of 3-pointers, but she was money in the mid-range. She’s more of a playmaker right now, but I think that she is going to have a much more reliable jumper next season. This was the first time I saw her look to shoot the ball when open this summer. This is a big stepping stone for Dorsey’s game.
Molly Lutmer — 2020 5’7 G — Lady Pure Prep Gold / Perry HS
Lutmer really impressed me with her shooting ability. They didn’t fall automatically for her, but I thought her shot looked really solid and it was repeatable. Lutmer is solid in all aspects of the game and if her shooting improves during the high school season, she will be a coveted small school prospect. She struggled a bit this past season shooting the ball and will likely have full reign to hoist up shots whenever she is able. Love her poise with the ball in her hands and isn’t shy about pulling up from anywhere on the court. She’s a player to watch for the small colleges around the state.
