Three of the nine schools have won state championships in the past 20 years, and several schools have sent athletes to play basketball at the next level.
Some of the players to watch this coming winter:
Carmen Heuker, 5-6 Botkins- after a solid freshman year where she caught the attention of area coaches, Carmen is a year older and a year better. Outstanding guard, good handles with both hands. Floor general and leader. Solid perimeter shooter, can score off the bounce, and get to the rim. Defensively, solid on ball. This sophomore is one to watch.
Lonna Heath, 5-7 Sidney Fairlawn- could be one of the biggest surprises in the county next season. This shooting guard had a slow start last year, but opened a lot of eyes in the tournament with games of 26 and 17 as a freshman. Expect her to be a prolific scorer this season. Excellet shooter with a high basketball IQ and a good work ethic.
Marissa Meiring, 5-10 Fort Loramie- Unquestioned leader for the very talented Redskins team, who returns everyone from their regional runner-up team. Marissa runs the floor well, can defend the post of out on the perimeter. Good handles, can score at the rim and is strong on the boards. Very good rebounder, and gets good position sealing off her defender. Great multi-sport athlete.
Kenzie Hoelscher, 5-11 Fort Loramie- another kid who uses her long body well on the boards to rebound well, can alter shots in the paint, is very athletic and runs the floor with anyone. Good perimeter shooter, can play either inside or outside. Multi-sports standout.
Ella Doseck, 5-7 Anna- very quick point guard who can run a team. Directs traffic and communicates well. High basketball IQ, can handle the ball against pressure. Knows where to make the right play at the right time. Can get to the rim with ease. Solid on-ball defender.
Lauren Barhorst, 6-2, Anna- athletic, runs the floor well, needs to continue to improve her inside presence. Defensively, blocks shot well and is a factor in the paint. Good rebounder, good basketball IQ.
Ashley Scott, 5-7 Russia- look for more production out of her this year as the Raiders lost two key seniors this year. Ashley is a quick guard with a good perimeter shot out to the arc. Also has a nice pull-up mid range and runs the floor hard and attacks the rim on the break. Good rebounder for a guard.
