Throughout the week we will be posting evaluations of 20 players by class (as voted on by Instagram followers) each day culminating with 10 evaluations of 2023s on Friday. This is a look at 10 players in the 2020 who I either thought played really well or I haven’t talked much about yet this summer. You can see all of the coverage from this weekend previously posted below.
Anna Deets — 5’8 SG/SF — All Iowa Attack Nike Carpenter 2020 / Mason City HS (IA)
Deets was really good this weekend and I love watching her play. She’s a very physical shooting guard who isn’t afraid to push the ball into the paint. She was being aggressive this weekend and scoring the ball pretty well on the inside. Three level scorer who should have a huge year at Mason City. Knockdown shooter from behind the arc.
Aubree Cummins — 5’3 PG — MN Heat Hinck 2020 / Mahtomedi HS (MN)
Cummins is a small lead guard who really looks to push the ball in transition. Solid facilitator with the ball in her hands and can really get things moving on offense. Heady defender who makes plays with her hands. I really like the fluidness that she plays with and show really solid basketball knowledge. She’s small but isn’t afraid of contact.
Aubrey Joens — 5’10 SG — All Iowa Attack EYBL 2020 / Iowa City High HS (IA)
Joens was a player who had the ball in her hands quite a bit this weekend. She’s a great shooter from the perimeter and was shooting the ball really well. Her ability to get to the rim this weekend was also evident where she finished well at times. Could use a little more strength to improve her efficiency at the rim, but she’s a high level impact scorer. Committed to Iowa State University.
Ellie Rengstorf — 5’6 PG/SG — Nebraska Attack UAA 2020 / Red Oak HS (IA)
Rengstorf was a really nice surprise this weekend. She played really well and is a sleeper in the 2020 class in Iowa. Scholarship player who is going to go to a school and be really good if the system is right for her. She was aggressive this weekend moving the ball and scoring. Super athletic player who knows how to fill the point guard role well.
Emma Ronsiek — 6′ SF/PF — Sioux Falls Attack / O’Gorman HS (SD)
While not with her SD Attack teammates this weekend, Ronsiek was playing with a few of her high school friends on her off week. It allowed me to see her be dominant with the ball in her hands more. Really good attacking the rim this weekend and was a steal for Creighton with her versatility and playmaking ability. Knocked down a couple really tough jumpers this weekend. Committed to Creighton.
Grace Gaber — 5’10 SF/PF — All Iowa Attack Nike Carpenter 2020 / Dowling Catholic HS (IA)
Gaber has always been a kid who can shoot the ball but this weekend was putting it on the floor quite a bit. She has gotten more mobile and has started to attack the rim a lot more. Really dynamic player when she has the penetrating part of her game down. Really skilled wing who can play spots 2-5 with her toughness and quickness. A little under-the-radar and I think she is going to be a hot commodity soon for a scholarship school.
Greta Wostoupal — 5’8 PG/SG — Nebraska Attack Select 2020 / Millard South HS (NE)
Wostoupal is a player who has a great feel for the game and a bit of scoring ability. She is probably best right now as a distributor but has the ability to score the ball too. Solid on ball defender who picks her spots well to be aggressive. I really liked her ability to lead her team this weekend when they were struggling. A true leader of a team.
Haley McClanathan — 5’10 SF — Nebraska Attack Select 2020 / Millard South HS (NE)
McClanathan is a really lengthy wing who plays with an insane motor. Tons of potential in her game and is going to be a kid who continues to improve. Really good ability to get to the rim and score the ball right now. Athletic kid with a lot of good things to look for in her game. Going to be an impact player at the next level. She is setting up for a big senior year.
Hanna Spearman — 5’7 PG — Nebraska Attack National 2020 / Gretna HS (NE)
Spearman has the look of a basketball player and then seeing her play you realize she is a very good one. Tough with the ball and makes all the right decisions. She is a really good passer and the ball isn’t going to stick in her hands. A true point guard with the ability to score as well. Good frame that can hold strength allows her to take contact and finish.
Jaedon Murphy — 5’11 SF/PF — Kingdom Hoops 2020 / North Polk HS (IA)
Murphy is really well running in transition and can stretch it out to beyond the perimeter. She’s almost a position-less player because she is fairly athletic and able to defend positions 3-5 but also handle the ball up the floor. Murphy isn’t a kid who is going to drop 20 points every game but have 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Really good glue player who in the right system can flourish.
