Jaya is one of her highest ranked Sophomores and has a chance to claim the #1 spot in our next update. McClure told me, “I’m a crafty point guard and play maker, poised. I play both sides of the ball, offense and defense (one of my top qualities). I can get to the bucket and shoot jumpers. I also like getting other teammates involved.” As Jaya continues to develop her game, she’s only going to get better and she’s already a 1,000 point scorer.
McClure has a good concept of her abilities and how to improve her game and take it to the next level. Jaya told me, “My strengths are handling the ball in traffic and in open court, being a pest on defense, attacking both the left and right with a quick first step, rebounding and hustling for my size, and the ability to create my own shot.” The point guard also realizes she has room to improve her game, “My weakness is my passing, they need to be more crisp and strong. I also need to work on increasing my upper and lower body strength when playing with older girls.” Coming off a great Freshman season, Jaya was very pleased with her performance, “I scored my 1000th point (Jaya has played varsity since 7th grade) and I contributed to CAL’s first 2A State championship; I made all tournament team. I maintained a 3.7 GPA, while being an athlete. I averaged 8.3 points, 4 assist, and 3 steals a game.”
Jaya is having a big AAU season. She’s been playing up a grade level for the 16u Gold Nike Lady Gym Rats EYBL and she told me that she’s having a great season, “AAU season has gone great. I’ve gotten a lot of exposure and a few college interest.” Among those schools who have expressed interest in McClure are Dayton, Wisconsin Green Bay, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, and Southern Illinois. With 3 years left in her high school career, McClure wants to have a big Sophomore season. She told me her goals for the upcoming season are to “Get closer to 2,000 points, be known as the top 2022 in the state, and get multiple triple and double doubles.” CAL is going to be firmly in the mix to win the 7th region and be a contender for the 2020 state championship. If they’re going to make a run at Rupp, Jaya McClure is going to need to be the point guard she has shown the potential to be.
