In May, the 14U team lost 3 games by 7 points in their first go-around in Minneapolis. In June, they went 2-2 at Summer Jam. They lost their final two games by 20 total points, to place fourth overall.
The two trips to Minneapolis exposed needs and poor habits. The Egstad process builds momentum through tournament adventures and he likes their development. Great up-court ball movement is one strong indicator. Precision “ping-pong” passing is another plus a delight to watch.
Moments of brilliance are Egstad’s rewards (underscore “moments”). Game one was tied at 32 with :23.1 to go when two superb passes sprung Emilee Fox (Mt Vernon-Plankington) down the lane for a winning floater – brilliant! Fox is a 2024 who played very well in the state A tournament. (Fox also ran legs on 4×200 & 4×400 relay teams that placed at State).
Other moments came from Emma Yost 5’11” (Parkston) and her post play, going left/right/up, rebounding, and passing inside.
Addison Klosterbuer (Central Lyon) hit multiple trey’s in each tournament game and meshed well with Fox in the back court. She is 5’9 and put together with strong ball and floor skills, she has game….and promise.
Smaller school players often dominate HS-level games, but summer ball contact with other talented girls/units means climbing the learning curve. Great fun to watch the big jumps a young team can make; this group is a favorite with close games and serious focus.
The duo of post players, Emily TerWee 6’0″ (West Lyon), and Gracie Traphagen 5″10″ (Groton) had moments of interior dominance – better footwork, passing, and quickness.
Kami Wadsworth 5’10” (Hamlin) went to the perimeter to drop three’s, flew inside to rebound, and did some magic with her back to the basket. Solid, all around gamer.
Pesky guards swarm the ball, and press well. Jessy VanderWerff 5″6″ (Gregory) came off ball screens to drive or dish. Bria Wasmund 5’4″ (Sibley) had a sweet, LH put- back to score.
AAU ball in Minnesota is the lions’ den facing the 14U girls twice in July. We’ll catch the final installment at the North Tartan Meltdown to report the progress of Egstad’s process.
