Continue ReadingThe MAYB Summer Kickoff held in Wichita involved action at all levels using gyms all over the Wichita region. The top level division, 11th/12th grade, games were held just north of the city at Wichita Hoops, Bel Aire. Teams from Colorado, Nebraska, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Oklahoma joined numerous entries from around Kansas to compete. Two positional breakouts will be posted separately that include players not listed here. While many 2019s signed to play at community colleges and NCAA Division II hit the floor this article will focus on 2020s and beyond with the exception of an unsigned 2019. States are listed to help highlight non-Kansans. Some coaches did a poor job of making rosters available either on Tournament Machine or on game score sheets causing most of those players tended to fall through the cracks.
OKPWP 2023 played great team basketball and won the top division. Against good defensive teams they did not rush. They just kept working for an open shot if it took 20 passes to get there. Their play was noted in Texas recently.
Lorissa Neher, 5’7″, G, 2019, F.O.E. – Plato High School, Missouri. Competitiveness and toughness is what stood out. Always on the floor whether going after loose balls, drawing charges, or getting clobbered while finishing. Unsigned 2019 who played half of 2018-19 due to graduating early and missed more than half of her senior season because of it.
Kinzie Comley, 5’7″, F, 2020, SC Dream – Sterling. Showed excellent slip move off offensive rebound using two dribbles against two opponents.
Skye Simunek, 5’4″, G, 2020, Oklahoma Shockers – Hennessey High School, Oklahoma. Handled the ball well full court, able to be fast with the ball.
Naomi Smith, 5’9″, G/F, 2020, Oklahoma Lightning Lawton – Eisenhower High School, Oklahoma. Athletic build and fast in transition. Defends opposing PG and posts strongly and played inside offensively.
DC Queens’ Elizabeth Battelo looks to inbound the ball.Elizabeth Battelo, 5’6″, G, 2021, DC Queens 2021 Baldwin – Crescent High School, Oklahoma. No look ability. Can finish off drives in traffic. Quick hands, three point range.
Chevelle Ralstin, 5’7″, F, 2021, Dream Team – Elkhart. Very aggressive and physical inside. Finds ways to score.
Katelyn Hurla, 5’5″, G, 2022, Kansas Twisters – St. Marys. Showed her speed, athleticism, and ability to shoot the three on the move. Boxes well on both ends of the floor.
Ellie Brueggemann, 5’6″, G, 2023, OKPWP 2023 – Liberty Christian, Oklahoma. Slim combo guard. A three-point threat with a quick perimeter release.
Grayci Wernli, 5’6″, G, 2023, OKPWP, 2023 – Bixby High School, Oklahoma. Good shooter with quick release. Notably quick hands on the defensive end.
