We will have a look at the newly oriented top ten in the state, followed by positional breakdowns in the 2020 class. The 2020 rankings came out a few days ago so let’s dive right into the Top Ten.
#1 – Caitlin Clark – 5’11 PG – Dowling Catholic – All Iowa Attack EYBL
Clark is the no doubt top player in the state. Some might not like her style of play but she’s the most dominant player in the state regardless of class. She’s missing the last half of her AAU career as she is currently overseas playing with the USA Women’s U19 World Cup team. Clark is a treat to watch because she is so fearless and aggressive. She will look to score the ball from anywhere on the floor and that makes her one of the most dangerous players in the nation. Despite being the top player in the state, and one of the top players in the country, Clark is the only uncommitted player in the top ten.
#2 – Aubrey Joens – 5’8 SG – Iowa City High – All Iowa Attack EYBL
Joens finds herself just behind Clark on the top prospects in the 2020 class. She’s an off-ball guard who can really shoot the ball with the best in the state. She has a bit of length to her game and can get to the rim pretty effectively as well. Joens has the ability to handle the ball if she is needed to but I envision an off-ball position for her at the next level. Joens is our highest ranked player who has pledged a commitment and she’ll be heading off to Iowa State after her senior year.
#3 – Shateah Wetering – 5’11 SF – Montezuma – All Iowa Attack EYBL
Wetering is one of my favorite players to watch throughout the state. She’s a very physically strong wing who is very versatile. She can play in the post or out on the wing with ease. Her athleticism sets her apart from others on the floor and she has the ability to get to the rim easily and finish. Her length allows her to finish over taller defenders and her strength helps her finish through players. She has started to shoot the ball from the perimeter more consistently this summer which is going to open a lot of avenues in her game. Wetering has committed to Iowa.
#4 – Sharon Goodman – 6’2 C – Crestwood – Lady Martin Brothers
Goodman is a very solid player on the inside. She has a good feel for the game, runs the floor well, and can score at the rim against pretty much anyone. Goodman is the best post in the state regardless of class and is one of the most dominant players in the state efficiency wise. Like Wetering, Goodman has pledged to Iowa and will give them two of the top three players in the state. She’s going to be a very good four year player in the upcoming years.
#5 – Emerson Green – 5’10 SG – Cedar Falls – Lady Martin Brothers
Green sits at #5 on the rankings but that isn’t at all indicative of her talent level. She’s one of the toughest competitors and best overall scorers in the state. Green is a very strong guard who can play both on the ball and off-ball. She’s wired to score the ball and can do so really well at every level on the floor. Green is a very tough competitor who doesn’t back down from anyone. Green has committed to Northern Iowa and is the highest ranked player in a very strong 2020 class for them.
#6 – Kayba Laube – 5’9 SG – Marion – All Iowa Attack EYBL
Laube is one of the best shooters in the state regardless of class and is going to be able to shoot the ball wherever she wants to. Laube gets to the rim well to keep the defense honest and she also plays very solid defense herself. She’s a high energy player who you can tell is a high IQ player and is a coach’s daughter. I don’t know if there is anyone in the state that I’d rather have take a 3-pointer to win a game than Laube. Laube is committed to Northern Iowa
#7 – Maya McDermott – 5’5 PG – Johnston – All Iowa Attack EYBL
Pound for pound McDermott is one of the toughest kids in the state. She’s a small and thin guard but makes up for that with how hard she plays and competes. She is a good passer who is a very good game manager and defender. She plays really hard and is a hassle to guard because of her size and motor. I look for her to really lead her team this upcoming season back to the state tournament. McDermott is a lead guard who has committed to Northern Iowa.
#8 – Rose Nkumu – 5’8 PG – Iowa City High – Kingdom Hoops
Nkumu could very well be the purest point guard in the top ten. She has an outstanding feel for the game and is one of the top defenders in the state. She is physically tough and is also one of the best passers in the state. Nkumu’s shooting has gotten better this summer as well and is starting to become more confident in it. Once that becomes a weapon, I can see Nkumu rising up the rankings. She is committed to Marquette.
#9 – Adrianna Katcher – 5’11 SG – Center Point-Urbana – Team Iowa
Katcher is a very versatile player who can play pretty much any spot on the floor with her length and aggression to the rim. Her ability to attack off of the bounce and shoot the ball from the perimeter is among the best in the state. She is a very solid defender who has the ability to guard multiple spots on the floor. Katcher led her team to the state championship last year and showed all the intangibles that you want along the way. Katcher is committed to Southern Illinois.
#10 – Ellie Foster – 5’10 PG – Dike-New Hartford – Iowa Prep
Foster is kind of the unheralded player in the top ten. She’s not a super flashy players, goes about her business very quietly, and doesn’t have Twitter in the age of social media. With that being said, Foster has the ability to score as well as anyone in this class and can take over games with ease. She’s a lengthy guard who has a lot of skill to her game. She passes the ball really well and creates space for herself as well as anyone in the state. Foster is must see basketball and has committed to UW-Green Bay.
