Continue ReadingThis past Friday and Saturday I went down to the Grand View team camp to end my summer basketball schedule. There were quite a few teams at all levels of competitiveness as well as a few players who caught my eye that I had not seen before. Below you’ll find 10 players who really stood out to me from the last two days of play with 10 more coming tomorrow. These players are in no particular order.
Sasha Koenig – 2021 – 5’5 PG – West Branch
Koenig played really well every game at the camp. She looks a lot more confident with the ball in her hands and simply carves up opposing defenses. Koenig plays hard all the time and is always in your face on both ends of the floor. Her shot has gotten a lot more consistent over the summer and I can see her rising up quite a bit in our updated rankings in the coming months.
Kaiya Luneckas – 2020 – 6′ PF – West Branch
Luneckas was a player who I hadn’t seen yet, but I really liked what I saw. She’s bouncy, long, and fairly athletic. Luneckas is still a bit raw but really goes hard after every rebound and has the ability to put it back up and score. She’s a player who is a hassle to deal with due to her motor and willingness to absorb contact. She would be a very solid prospect but she’s currently committed to Iowa for softball.
Delaynie Luneckas – 2022 – 6’1 PF – West Branch
The Luneckas who I do know carried her play over from the AAU circuit into team camp. She’s not as athletic as her sister but still has a lot of skill. She is still getting comfortable around the rim but plays really well in the high post. Luneckas is a player to keep an eye on over the next few years and as she adds strength, skill, and quickness could become one of the top 2022 prospects in the state.
Taya Young – 2021 – 5’7 SG – West Branch
Young has always been a steady presence. She can hit the jumper, she gets to the rim well and finishes, and she plays very solid defense. Young handles the ball well and can run the offense when Koenig is off the floor. She isn’t going to blow you away with her play but she’s always going to be steady with the ball and make the right plays. She’s a nice prospect to keep an eye on, one that might go under-the-radar.
Ali Hoffert – 2021 – 5’9 PG – Turkey Valley
Hoffert was someone who immediately jumped onto my radar at the team camp. She’s a tall and long guard who has a bit of flair to her game. Hoffert can shoot it pretty well and can run the offense. Good ball handler who has a really nice feel for the game. She transferred to Turkey Valley this year and I think her game is going to be a lot better for it. She didn’t play AAU and from what I saw this past week she could be a diamond in the rough.
Emma Dighton – 2021 – 5’8 SF – Boone
Dighton is a player who I have really liked for a long time, but wanted to see her be more consistent. This past week I thought that she looked more athletic and bouncy than last year. Her shot looks a lot more clean and I think it is going to be something you really have to respect this season. Dighton showed a very nice feel for the game and solid court vision throughout the camp. If she decides on the basketball route she is a very nice prospect with athleticism.
Sophia Jungling – 2020 – 5’5 PG – Aplington-Parkersburg
Jungling is one of those players who goes all out every single trip down the floor. She is a very good on-ball defender with her quick hands and her speed. Jungling is the type of player that simply beats you down the floor every single time and there isn’t much you can do about it. Really good knowledge of the game and she is pound for pound one of the toughest kids in the state. Should be a pretty sought after player who can come in and be a solid system fit.
Megan Johnson – 2020 – 5’9 SG – Aplington-Parkersburg
Johnson was really good both days for Aplington-Parkersburg. She showcased a very good jumper and was getting to the rim really well. Johnson has a very solid frame that can hold strength and adds some athleticism to her game. She’s a taller guard than Jungling but creates a really good 1-2 punch for her high school team. Someone who is probably a bit under-the-radar right now but should be in store for a big year.
Annika Headington – 2021 – 5’7 SF – Waukon
Headington is a player who doesn’t jump out at your right away because she isn’t flashy. She just gets things done on both ends of the floor at a high level. Headington plays really hard all game long and is always looking to make a play. Her jumper is looking more consistent and is starting to go down at a rate that you have to respect. Headington is going to be a big force for Waukon this upcoming season as a positionless player.
Maggie Criswell – 2023 – 5’5 PG – Waukon
This was my first look at Criswell and you can just tell that she’s going to be a very solid basketball player. Coming into her freshman season, I was impressed by the poise that she showed throughout the day. She’s already pretty skilled and can knock down the outside jumper. Criswell is going to be one of the better players on this Waukon team once we get to the end of the year just due to her poise and feel for the game.
