The Top-100 is an honorary reward for those underclassmen who performed well during the previous high school season. The attendees participated in stations and games, and I thought there was really good depth to each team, and several of Indiana’s top prospects were in attendance.
At the bottom of this article I have listed out all of the 2020 prospects who participated in the event. There were some new additions from our preview article, as several girls were unfortunately out with injuries. 53 members in the Class of 2020 participated, and that includes 18 of the top 30 prospects on our 2020 rankings list, including our top two. Immediately below are a handful of prospects from the Class of 2020 who I thought really stood out when I was able to see them, though many more also played at a high level.
I feel like over the course of the last week and a half, no player from Indiana has stood out more than maybe Sydney Graber of Homestead High School. Throughout the Spring, Sydney put a specific emphasis on making herself leaner and more explosive, and the results are starting to pay off. I thought throughout the Spring she was still dealing with the affects a bit, as she exhausted easily, but so far this July she is playing with a nice burst and incredible energy. She is shooting it well, attacking the basket off the dribble a lot more, and we’re starting to see a prospect who can possibly go into Central Michigan a year from now and contribute immediately.
Another player who has had a big month so far is Sydney Parrish of Hamilton Southeastern High School. She put up huge scoring numbers at the EYBL event in Indianapolis July 5th-8th, and she did the same thing yesterday. She too is playing with a bit more explosiveness, she’s much more assertive off the bounce, and she is absorbing and finishing through contact much better than she ever has. By her becoming a consistent multi-level scorer instead of a jump-shooter in past years, she will really elevate her chances of playing early for a nice Oregon team.
I will keep with the Sydney “theme” and now turn to Sydney Watkins of Heritage Christian School next. This Sydney has been elite at the defensive end of the floor. In Louisville she locked up a pair of nationally ranked guards from Illinois, one of which is already committed to an SEC school, and yesterday she equaled that task against our state’s better guards. Offensively, she looks much more confident scoring it, she’s really attacking and finishing well, and she’s starting to make perimeter jumpers more consistently. She has really seen her interest skyrocket of late, earning multiple Division-I offers this last week.
One player who doesn’t get a lot of press is Madison Webb of Bedford North Lawrence High School. Throughout her career, she has transformed herself from a perimeter shooter to more of a post with very good face-up skill. At yesterday’s event, she was one of the best posts there. She was fluid and athletic in transition, she scored using post moves around the basket, and she caught it and finished it well off of cuts. As with most bigs, I think her college interest will start to pick up when a couple of other prospects commit.
One of the most enjoyable players to watch yesterday was Cherrelle Newsom of Ben Davis High School. She “protected” her home floor, she shot lights-out at times, and she created a lot of energy that resonated through her entire team. She is a tough-nosed, gritty, and strong-for-her-size guard who plays with a lot of emotion and feistiness. Not only does she shoot it well, but she can create offense for teammates, she herself can finish inside, and she is quite the pest at the defensive end of the floor. I feel like three years from now, several schools could regret not recruiting her harder.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…Madison Layden of Northwestern is the ultimate Swiss Army Knife in the state right now. She can handle the ball and create offense for others, she is good attacking the basket and finishing through contact, she can shoot it consistently outside, plus she defends multiple positions and rebounds well. I’ve just always been impressed with how much of the game she affects, whether she’s scoring it or not. Because of her unique versatility, I feel like she can probably help Purdue when she steps on campus a year from now.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: NorthWood’s Maddy Payne had a nice showing at the event. She’s a long, bouncy, skillful F/C who can play in the mid-post or around the basket. Abby Stoddard of Crown Point had a solid day as well. She’s still one of those kids who will be much different/better once she gains more strength in the future, but she does try to play physical, which is a great sign. Alaya Chapman of Fort Wayne South Side did some really nice things yesterday, including knocking down a couple of perimeter jumpers. She is a strong athlete with good ball skill and the versatility to play either forward spot. And Rylie Stephens of Triton Central has always been a nice slashing athlete as a scorer, and recently she has shot the ball very well outside, but the more I watch her, I wonder if she’s just more comfortable as a ball-handler and a facilitator…sort of like a point forward type. She does a really nice job of getting teammates involved.
