Continue ReadingMonday Ben Davis High School played host to the annual IBCA Top-100 Showcase. The Top-100 is an honorary reward for those underclassmen who performed well during the previous high school season. The attendees participated in stations and games, and I thought there was really good depth to each team, plus several of Indiana’s top prospects were in attendance. All-in-all, I totaled 114 girls who participated in the event.
At the bottom of this article I have listed out all of the 2021 & 2022 prospects who participated in the event. There were some new additions from our preview article, as several girls were unfortunately out with injuries. 47 members in the Class of 2021 participated, and that includes 24 of the top 30 prospects on our 2021 rankings list, including our top two and eight of our top ten. 14 members in the Class of 2022 participated, and that includes six of the top nine prospects on our 2022 rankings list, including #3 through #6 (#1 & #2 are currently injured). Immediately below are a handful of prospects from the Classes of 2021 & 2022 who I thought really stood out when I was able to see them, though many more also played at a high level.
One player who has been a standout so far this month is Tenleigh Phelps (2021) of Triton Central High School. She has the physical makeup and strength of a post, and she can score it inside when necessary, but she is extremely skilled with the ball around the perimeter. She has a solid handle and she can create space with the dribble, she is a very good shooter with range to ‘3’, and she can put her head down and attack the basket. A year ago I playfully compared her to Charles Barkley, she seemed to appreciate it, and I think that analogy still sticks, as she likes to play a physical style from the wing. She has been rewarded with quite a few Division-I offers over the last couple of months.
Fishers High School’s Katie Burton (2021) never seems to slow down. She is a scoring machine, and she is always on attack when she takes the floor. She is still best off the bounce by far, but her perimeter shot has become much more accurate, creating easier driving lanes for her. She has done a really nice job of facilitating with her grassroots team this season as well. She is definitely a nice athlete, so I think the next step for her is to put in the same energy at the defensive end and try to become a real pest who can contain most guards off the dribble. That will help her get to that next level.
I really thought Rose Fuentes (2021) of Hammond Bishop Noll Institute had a nice showing on Monday. She is a fairly strong wing forward, and she shoots it very well from the perimeter. But when I got the chance to watch her, I was most impressed with a couple of her drives where she shot-faked the defender to get them off-balance, attacked the paint, then changed directions with the dribble and finished contested shots around the basket. I wish she was just a little more explosive, but she has worked a great deal to improve her overall skillset. Look for her to have a big 2019-2020 season for Bishop Noll.
LaPorte High School’s Ryin Ott (2021) is such a joy to watch at times, because she’s so long, fluid, and just smooth out there on the floor. She never seems to rush or force the action, and she’s best when she has the ball in her hands and can facilitate/create for others. She has learned how to move without the ball and find ways to contribute without it in her hands, but she’s at her best when she can be that creative point forward. This coming season at LaPorte she’ll be without her sister Riley (2019) for the first time, so I’d look for her to see a major uptick in responsbility leading the Slicers.
The continued development of Kate Clarke’s (2022) game has netted her a handful of Big Ten offers now, and the 6-0 wing from Carmel High School is shooting it at a high clip. Not only is she making shots, but her mechanics and the speed of her shooting process is impressively quick. But what I also like, is she’s starting to mix in a lot more drives and scores around the basket, and that could be a byproduct of maturity and the fact that she’s gaining more strength. Her handle has also developed nicely, and she’s creating space off the bounce for that deadly shot, turning herself into a really nice weapon for the Greyhounds, inside or out.
After watching her a couple of times last week in grassroots events, I got another good look at Alyssa Crockett (2022) of Westfield High School, and I think she’s really close to breaking through in a deep 2022 class. I’ve said before that she reminds me of Meg Newman (2021) somewhat stylistically, athletically, and size-wise. If Meg’s path is at all telling, I think Alyssa will start to see some similar offers come in over the next calendar year. She is tall, long, wiry strong, and skilled, she has the ability to put it on the floor or shoot the ball facing, and she is just a little strength away from finishing everything around the basket. She does a lot of nice things the “right way”, and she’ll be fun to watch these next three years.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: I was absolutely thrilled to see Brownsburg’s Ally Becki (2021) back in action. While she didn’t participate in contact activities, she did go through the non-contact stations and looked like she’s starting to get her strength and speed back. With this being mid-July, I’d anticipate her being full-speed in November. Vincennes Rivet’s Lauren Carie (2021) has been really good so far this July. She is a wiry strong, fluid post who is always around the basketball. She strikes me as a kid who will draw more and more interest over the next year as coaches get to know her name/game. Makena Knepp (2021) of Northridge was a late addition to the event, and the strong and athletic wing had a nice all-around showing Monday. She should be an impactful player in Middlebury this season. It’s rare to consider a Top-10 prospect in a class as a ‘sleeper’, but I think that’s exactly what Bridget Dunn (2021) of Carmel is becoming. At 6-2 to 6-3 she moves really well around the floor, she has the skill to handle it and shoot it around the perimeter, and she has grown about six inches over the last two years. As she continues to add strength, she could be scary good.
