Due to my experiences in skills training and high school coaching, it is often easy to notice that a player spends time in the gym. Players are often told what to work on and how to be better but not all players take the time to change their game.
Largely because it is it is not an easy task once one has became so habitual in their game and skill type. It takes hard work, understanding, dedication, and sacrifice to add a completely new element to your game. Therefore, I personally find it admiring and I hold high respect for the players that make an to improve or add to their game!
All of the players listed I have watched play at a minimum of 10 different times throughout the year with their high school and travel teams. Each one of the players either added or improve their game in areas I’ve always thought they could be good in if they worked for it. Read below to see what improvements and additions these players created for themselves!
The Players:
Jayla Burgess, 6’2, Tulsa Union HS
Forward/Guard, Class of 2020
Jayla Burgess outside game
Jayla burgess liked to be seen around the mid post, high post and the occasional short corner. She often handled the ball well whenever she did dribble the ball. The times she would handle the ball, I always thought how much her game could take off if she honed in on being more active with the ball in her hands off of the dribble, and that she has done. Over the course of the summer, she is seen leading transition, driving to the basket off of few dribbles with proper finishes and operates within the entire arc rather than only the mid and high post.
Sydney Brown, 5’8, Yukon HS
Guard, Class of 2021
Sydney Brown shooting the ball
Watching Sydney over a year now to show the strides in her shot. Constant conversations of improving her shot and her struggle to make her shots more consistent. In the beginning her shot selection rarely involved outside of the arc with poor touch on the ball and fluidity of the insert ball in the goal. Sydney now consistently makes 2 to 3 shots from the arc. One game, she even went for 5 made 3-pointers. Her form is consistent and her prowess has became confident in shooting the shot with good shot awareness from the perimeter.
