It’s the last week of July, and there was nothing of any significance on the line, but don’t tell that to the up-and-coming Chaska Hawks. Whenever someone beats Hopkins – any time, any place, in any way – that’s news in Minnesota girls basketball. That’s what Chaska did Monday on opening day at the Hall of Fame Summer High School Invitational, pulling off a 74-70 upset of the defending state champions at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. That was the biggest news of the day, but it wasn’t the only news. Here are a few highlights of Monday’s action.


I can’t give you a detailed play by play of this one because I was over on another court watching Ellie Buzzelle of Rogers make magic. More on that in a minute. But as happens in these situations, word quickly filtered from one gym to the other that Chaska was ahead in the waning moments of the game. Doing my best Usain Bolt imitation – OK, walking briskly – I slipped over to the main court in time to see Chaska was up by 4 points with under 90 seconds left.
