Prospect Spotlight: Grace Gaber (2020)
The class of 2020 in Iowa is loaded and might be one of the deepest in terms of college prospects over the next few years. One player that is firmly on the radar of college coaches is Grace Gaber. The 5’11 versatile post player from Dowling Catholic has the ability to play both on the wing and in the post at times. She is your prototypical stretch four who can stand in the corner and make 3-pointers with the best in the state. Gaber scored 8.6 points a game last season and shot the ball at a 42 percent clip from behind the arc as well as 85 percent from the free throw line. This upcoming season Gaber is going to have to mold herself into a more all-around scorer if Dowling Catholic wants to make sure they get to hold the trophy at the end of the year.
Gaber is a versatile player and has the ability to play multiple spots on the court. With this versatility her ability to shoot the ball is key as it presents a mismatch on the floor at all times. This summer Gaber has been hard at work on her game to improve herself for next season. She has been playing with All Iowa Attack this summer on the Nike Carpenter team, which is the team just below the EYBL squad. With that, she has been able to play some of the best competition in the nation.
“My high school coach has developed my defensive habits so I’m continuing to work on them this summer,” Gaber said. “I’m working on my moves to the hoop and finishing with contact.”
Gaber has an unorthodox shot, but it goes in quite often. She is very good off-the-catch and she loves to shoot from the corners. Her offensive role is expanding this summer as she has worked on the things that she mentioned above. All of this has led to quite a bit of interest from schools at the next level. Gaber has a future in college basketball given her improvement this summer and her shooting ability. First, she is trying to focus on her upcoming season.
“I’m looking forward to one last season with my teammates,” Gaber said. “Also I am looking forward to having an influential role again. I’m also looking forward to making it to the state tournament for the fourth year in a row and fulfilling our team goal of winning a state championship.”
Gaber’s game will set up well for teams looking for a versatile shooter. She is one of the top shooters in the 2020 class in terms of efficiency. With a big high school season I imagine that you’ll be seeing some offers come in for Gaber and a big end of July could accelerate that process.
