After a rough year from these teams in the GWOC last year, all five teams will be competing to turn things around and claim the initial division championship when the dust settles this winter.
Fairborn- the Skyhawks have the most wins returning from last year, after finishing 11-12 overall last season. They expect to improve on that when things get started in October as they have a new coach and some talented returning players. They will miss senior Khala Powell who is out recovering from an ACL injury, but they have two key players returning. Junior Jodee Austin is a solid point guard who has improved, while sophomore Natalie Oktavec finished last season strong and looks to step into the spotlight this season.
Sidney- it was a rough year for the Yellow Jackets last season, as their all-conference guard tore her ACL early in the season and the team struggled to win after that point. Things will be different this year in Sidney, with a new coach Jamal Foster and two young guns ready to unleash on the league. Freshmen Allie Stockton is a major force and has immediate Player of the Year talent. Another freshman Lexee Brewer is a special guard. Look for improvement.
Stebbins- The Indians return sophomore Kaitlyn Seibel and junior Kennedie Lingg. In the past Stebbins has been competitive in the league they played in, and coming off a 7-15 season, they look to challenge near the top of the Valley Division.
West Carrollton- Also earning seven wins last season were the Pirates, and are hoping to see more offensive firepower out of their returning players this season. Senior Jailyn Seege is the top returning scorer for West Carrollton, and she should get help from senior Brooklyn Cass and sophomore Tarynn Dewberry.
Xenia- Another team who also struggled last season, and they have made a coaching change to Jessica Threats and they look to contend this year. A couple of players who return are junior Kamea Baker and sophomore Brynna Mardis.
5 Players to Watch
Jodee Austin- Fairborn
Allie Stockton- Sidney
Kaitlyn Seibel- Stebbins
Brooklyn Cass- West Carrollton
Kamea Baker- Xenia
MVL Valley League Notes
- This league is legit wide open to claim the championship with no total clear cut favorite. If I had to pick one, I would say Fairborn due to experience back, but watch out for the young guns in the league. All of the teams were a combined 26-88 last season.
- A familiar name is back on the bench for Fairborn, as alum Brooklyn (Pumroy) Summit takes over the reigns this season. She was an all-state performer with the Skyhawks back during her day, and her husband Tyler is the son of the late University of Tennessee Hall of Fame womens basketball coach Pat Summit.
- Xenia’s new coach Jessica Threats is a familiar name on the basketball circuit, as she is a major figure for the We Got Next AAU club. She is also the varsity volleyball coach at Xenia.
