With the Rites of Passage event cancelled this year, the USE Basketball Family Reunion took center stage. The main event of the day was the High School Showdown which featured Team 2022 vs. Team 2021. Team 2021 took a big loss to Team 2020 so they came in with some extra motivation this time around and handled their younger opponents, 78-70.
Taylor Gibson, Bishop McNamara, 2021, PF
Taylor returned to this year’s Family Reunion looking like a different player. I was impressed with last year’s version, but the new and improved model was spectacular. After a successful season playing with Boo Williams on the Nike EYBL Circuit, Taylor is a much more confident player with more weapons in her bag. Her handle is much improved and she showed the ability to get to the rim and finish. More impressive was her shooting from the perimeter. She knocked down several threes and looked real confident launching from healthy distances.
Messiah Hunter, Hopewell, 2021, Wing
Another 2021 who returned to the Family Reunion and showed off. At 6’2′ Messiah has legit size and knows how to use it. Post ups, mid range turnaround jumpers, long jumpers and slashes were all on display. One of the coaches in the game said she plays just like former Celtic star Reggie Lewis. That was a spot on assessment. Messiah is also an excellent defender with a willingness to bang on the boards and scrap for loose balls. She’s a big time prospect.
Ny’Shae Weaver, Coppin Academy, 2021, Wing
After a strong summer on the Under Armour circuit with Power Move, Ny’Shae did her thing to close out the summer. She showed some range to fifteen feet and a willingness to shoot those shots, something I had not seen before. She is an explosive athlete with excellent speed and showed off some nice footwork in this game. She picked up some D1 offers this summer so look for her to have a big high school season.
Kristin Sterling, Pikesville, 2021 Wing
Kris picked up a couple of offers in July and showed up at the Family Reunion to do some work. She is solidly built to bang inside and she’s not afraid to do it. At 5’11” she has the size to get her mid range shots off against most defenders and she is knock down shooter from three. This was a very solid performance for one of the better 2021 prospects in Baltimore.
Kayla Cabbagestalk, Chesapeake, 2021
Kayla did not have the biggest scoring performance, but she dominated the boards and strapped up on defense all over the court. The 5’11” wing was fresh off a tour of the Under Armour circuit with Power Move, Kayla was a terror all day. She defended guards, wings and bigs and usually got the best in her match ups. Every team needs this type of player in their rotation.
