I try and make things as simple as possible yet that sometimes doesn’t work but always remember, it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against and scoring 20 against average high school players doesn’t always equate to scoring 10 against BCS prospects so I love seeing players in different settings, how they react and even more importantly, how much they progress. The first group of players I ranked I had seen multiple times, here’s an updated evaluation on the ones I saw at Summer Elite Championship
Breanna DavisCarleigh Wenzel-5’11 G San Antonio Finest Dungee ( O’Connor HS) – one of the best shooters in the state, any class and with her size and numerous BCS offers already on the table, this. Young lady is on the verge of blowing up even more. Her shot is smooth and release is not only quick but accurate and as she continue to add more variety……
Amina Muhammad-6’4 P Pro Skills 17U EYBL (DeSoto HS) showing signs of being able to dominate on both ends, always reacted well on defense, excellent timing to alter or block shots but an improved and impressive offensive skill set has college coaches all over this young lady and when you throw in the intangibles, she’s going to be hard to handle before it’s all said and done
Breanna Davis-5’8 PG Drive Nation 16U EYBL (Red Oak HS)explosive first step with an even more explosive jumper, her ability to create her shot and elevate over defenders has always been there but the progression from her running the one will keep her on BCS short lists because she sees the floor, understands how to control tempo and makes those around her better
Jazzy Owens-5’8 PG Pro Skills 16U EYBL (Liberty HS) the total package was seen in MS, energy level stayed high she attacked the basket relentlessly and her poise on the court told me what was coming. She defends baseline to baseline, handles the ball well under pressure and can flat out shoot it, mid to long range
Ayanna ThompsonAlyssa Tarpley-5’10 G Cy Fair 16U EYBL (Allen HS) falls into that “big guard that can shoot” category that collegecoaches love and she can definitely shoot it. She can change the momentum of a game at the blink of an eye, catch and shoot, quick release and stop and pop all play roles in her mid to long range game
Ayanna Thompson-6’1 SF Drive Nation 16U EYBL (Desoto HS) I say that being long and athletic is a great starting point and when you add under control, that adds fuel to the fire and her flame is hot because she attacks from everywhere which tells you she can handle the ball and score after the lick but she also can not only score facing the basket, she rebounds on both ends and defends
Kayla Cooper-5’8 PG Cy Fair Elite 16U EYBL (Plano East HS) somewhat of a prototype PG that can score but she’s dangerous either way and when you can create for yourself and your teammates, that’s huge and watching her go full speed hitting players on the money over and over told me it wasn’t a mirage
Caitlyn PanucoChristeen Iwuala-6’3 PF San Antonio Finest CEE LOU (Ronald Reagan HS) I truly hate some of the old sayings I used to here like “you can’t teach size” which means absolutely nothing if you’re not mobile, athletic or can play and I’m loving the little things she does on the court. She reacts so well on defense, she’s powerful and she finishes strong and that’s including after contact. Her upside is amazing, she is showing BEAST like signs so ……
Caitlyn Panuco-5’6 PG Lady Wolfpack (Whitney HS) the more I’ve watched her over the years, the more I’m amazed at some of the things she does on the court. She is definitely a scorer, mid to long range her shot is consistently falling and her body control adds even more as she attacks the basket from anywhere she wants. The thing about it is that she gets hers in the flow, she understands how to run a team but when it’s time to take over, she can deliver
