Most are not done growing and are still in the process of developing their skills and learning who they are as a basketball player. When you do come across a young player that at least matches those criteria in some way, however, you get an idea how special of a talent they are. That’s what you see in Emily Fisher.
Emily is a 5’11” Guard from the Wolverinas AAU organization that will be attending Libertyville High School for her Freshman season. The Wolverinas were a National force on the AAU scene, finishing with a 2019 record of 65-6, winning 11 tournaments in total.
I asked Emily about her thoughts on such a dominant season, and she said “I think it was good! We made it to the Final Four at the Run for the Roses and then at the Nike TOC we made a run to the finals, which were great accomplishments for the team. Personally, I was named to the All-Tournament team playing a year up at the Run for the Roses tournament, so that was something I was proud of.”
At 5’11”, Emily could match up and dominate at every position against 15U opponents. Against older, more mature, and physically bigger opponents at the high school level, she’ll have to show off those guard skills to maximize success.
When asked about the strengths in her game, Emily said “Getting to the rim and finishing or getting to the free throw line. Not too many players my age can guard me 1 on 1 so if they double down, I have great teammates that I can pass to that can knock down shots. Coaches have also been telling me that my court vision and IQ is very high for my age.”
Watching her play just once will put you in agreeance with those coaches. Not only is she taller and more physical than most girls she played against, but more mentally mature as well. The game moves at a slower pace for her than most incoming Freshman, which allows her to dominate offensively.
In terms of what she is looking to keep working on going into Freshman season, Emily says “My focus has and will continue to be extending my shooting range. I have already been working on that, but still being selective with my matchups on when to use it is something I’ll continue to get better at. My high school coaches also want me to be relentless on defense.”
What’s going on in recruiting?
“I have an offer from Iowa State and will be attending a football game on an unofficial visit there in October. I will also be going to Nebraska at the end of September for a visit and football game. I have also heard from or spoken with coaches from Iowa, USC, Louisville, Illinois, DePaul, Minnesota, Boston College, Illinois State, St. Louis University, Drake, and Missouri.”
That list of schools shows just how special of a player Emily is at such a young age. Her basketball IQ is high and with some continued development over the next year, I definitely look for that offer list to grow before her Sophomore year.
