Brown County is a large piece of Ohio’s southern border, across the Ohio River from Kentucky. President Ulysses S. Grant spent his childhood in Brown County – which was formed from pieces of Adams County and Clermont County. A strong agricultural area, Brown County is known as the origin of white burley tobacco. It is also the home to the Ohio Tobacco Museum, located in Ripley.
Let’s take a look at a number of talented players from Brown County.
Olivia Crawford burst onto the scene and made an immediate impact as a high-scoring freshman. (Photo Credit: The Ripley Bee)Olivia Crawford – 5’6 Guard – Fayetteville Perry – Class of 2022
At 18 points per game in her initial season, Crawford was one of the leading scorers for any freshman in the state of Ohio. She had 11 20+ point outings. A slasher who loves to get to the rim, Crawford scores in a variety of ways – constantly putting pressure on defenses. She is also an adequate defender on the perimeter.
Camryn Pickerill – 5’6 Guard – Eastern Brown – Class of 2020
Camryn has especially quick hands – it’s impressive to watch her pick the pocket of an unsuspecting ball-handler and then start the fast break for her team. She is tough and rarely makes mistakes, always in the right spot – whether it be getting loose balls or breaking down defenses.
Taylor Malone – 5’10 Forward – Fayetteville Perry – Class of 2020
At 9 points and over 8 rebounds per game, Malone was capable of a double-double on any game night during her junior season and it’s a safe bet to assume that she may average a double-double this year. Taylor can also add a handful of assists since she is a tremendous passer.
Maddi Benjamin – 5’7 Guard – Georgetown – Class of 2021
An outstanding shooter from all 3 levels, as well as the free throw line, Maddi was an All-Ohio selection for Georgetown during her sophomore season. Her team was balanced offensively, so Benjamin only scored 11 PPG, but she is a surefire candidate to score 1000 points in her career as her role increases.
Baylee Jones – 5’9 Guard – Western Brown – Class of 2021
Jones has a tremendous motor. She is constantly making plays on the defensive side of the ball – deflections, steals and blocked shots are common for her. Baylee is at her best driving to the rim and she has a large toolbox of finishing moves. In transition – she is nearly unstoppable and she has no problem finishing through contact.
