At the conclusion of the regular season, Hughes and Taft tied with 9-1 records in conference play, with their losses coming against one another. FOrtunantly, 2019-20 could be much of the same. Hughes and Taft bring back a lot of their talent from last season and appear to be 1-2 again. Woodward will be a team to watch as the 3 teams appear to be the top 3 in the CMAC Red. Below you will find who is back for all 6 teams in the conference, quick notes on all teams, and my predictions as to where I see them all finishing this season.
Taft– 2018-19 record: 18-6
Who is back: Ainjul Harper (2021), Kelyasia Pouncy (2021), Aaliyah Harper (2020), Moriah Humphrey (2022)
The Senators bring back plenty of scoring from a year ago after tying Hughes for the CMAC Red title. Between Ainjul Harper and Kelyasia Pouncy they have ways of scoring from outside and inside. Pouncy especially is one of the best rim protectors in the conference and should continue to lead the Senators in the paint.
Hughes– 16-6
Who is back: Jariah McCrory (2021), Tamira Scott (2021), Kyrah Ewing (2020), Enayla Baskin (2020)
Hughes finished with a tie in the CMAC Red with Taft and split the regular season title. The Big Red have a ton of talent in the backcourt with Scott and Ewing. Hughes appears to have more upperclassmen and more experience coming back which should allow them to again finish near the top of the CMAC Red.
Woodward– 7-16
Who is back: Ti’Aija Christopher (2020), Jamya Smith (2020), D’asya Steels (2020), Keinizah Fairfax (2020)
The Bulldogs struggled against CMAC powers Taft and Hughes last season, but return a solid core group of girls in the senior class. Christopher was the 2nd leading scorer in the conference last year and makes an impact on the game on both ends of the floor. Throw in 6’0 post players Smith and Fairfax and you have several weapons for Christopher to get the ball to.
Aiken– 6-16
Who is back: Michelle Williams (2021)
The Falcons are losing 2 All-Conference players, but bring back junior Michelle Williams who had glimpses of being a solid scoring guard a year ago. Last season was a struggle on the offensive end and the Falcons will need to find alternative scoring options if they are going to be competitive.
Shroder– 3-20
Who is back: Navia Smith (2022), Kaylah Barr (2020), Shatia Payne (2020)
Shroder struggled immensely last season, only beating Woodward, Aiken, and Western Hills during the season. Barr and Payne will be leaned on for leadership while Smith will be the main scoring threat during the year. I think they will improve off their 3 win season a year ago.
Western Hills– 4-18
Who is back: Akira Lanza (2021), Monique Williams (2022)
Lanza and Williams were the two leading scorers a year ago and are back for another season, but Western Hills will need to find a way to be more competitive in CMAC play. The Mustangs are still a pretty young team as 9 of their 13 girls on roster a year ago were either sophomores or freshmen.
Predicted Finish
1. Hughes- Most talent back and more experienced
2. Taft- AN elite team but don’t bring back as much talent/depth as Hughes
3. Woodward- solid core of seniors to build off of and could give CMAC powers a tough matchup
4. Shroder- Have a couple different scoring options back and shown they could overpower Aiken
5. Aiken- Lose too much with their All Conference losses and too many issues on offense
6. Western Hills- Still a younger team and could be a competitor next year
