In my final piece for this event, I will share some more evals of players at a variety of positions and give my closing thoughts on how the camp went overall.
Player Evals:
2021 5’11 PF Madison Rubino (Glacier Peak HS) – A solid power forward that can mix things up inside the post. Madison can finish inside and appears to be an above average athlete all around, although she can continue to grow in this area as a bit of an undersized post. Madison was one of the better rebounders at the camp and she has good reaction times inside the painted area. One area to improve that would really benefit her is three point shooting and perimeter skills in general. If Madison can become a pick and pop threat, she will be able to play at the Division 1 level, because her motor is already there.
2022 6’2 PF/C Cori Wilcox (Lake Stevens HS) – One of the more physical players that attended camp. In one on one drills she utilized a powerful back down dribble to pin opponents under the rim to get her shot off. Cori cleaned up the boards well and fired off some good outlet passes. Continuing to work on her footwork in the post and hitting the mid range jumper in live action will really help her game moving forward.
2022 6’0 SF Camryn Cartwright (Chiawana HS) – Long and agile wing prospect with good length and a decent looking jump shot as well. Camryn is pretty skilled for her age and height and seems to be only scratching the surface of her potential. Continuing to grow stronger and initiating contact/physicality will allow her to utilize her great length even more so.
2021 6’0 PF Fatoumata Jaiteh (Meadowdale HS) – Fatoumata gets my award for being the most vocal player in camp. She instantly stood out, because she cheered on her teammates, called out screens and asked insightful questions. She is a sponge trying to soak up everything possible as a raw, but talented prospect. She has good athleticism and developing footwork. She is also a decent mid range shooter, but she can continue to expand her range and consistency. With continued development, the Meadowdale standout will have a good shot at playing at the D1 level.
2023 6’1 C Vivienne Berrett (Stanwood HS) – The camp was extremely guard/wing heavy, but this incoming freshman definitely showed to be more of a throwback post player. Vivienne is still growing into her body, but she has pretty good strength and rebounding ability. She will need to continue to work on her all around offensive skill set and footwork inside the post.
2022 5’9 SG Zahirah Walton (Kentlake HS) – Zaza easily had one of the, if not the highest ceiling out of anyone in camp. The winner of the one on one competition has smooth handles, a natural feel for the game and above average athleticism. She has an advanced frame for her age, with good length and strength. Zaza is still learning how to play the game and she will need to take some lessons on shot selection, but the tools are all there for her to play at the D1 level. Fun prospect to watch when she is fired up and really getting after it.
2024 PG Receives First Offer:
Incoming 8th grader Teagan Colvin announced that she walked away from camp with her first Division 1 offer from Head Coach Wendy Schuller. Teagan fit right in with the big girls and showed why she is on the radar of colleges already. She can control the pace of the game, dribble with either hand equally good, she can also pass with either hand and she can really hit the long range three. She is slight of frame right now, but she has years to mature and grow and stronger. Definitely a young player to keep an eye on moving forward!
Closing Thoughts:
Overall, the EWU Elite Camp was a success for everyone involved. The coaching staff was able to get a firsthand look at players that possibly have a chance to play in college and the numbers were lower, allowing for a lot of one on one interaction. Some players helped their stock walking out of camp and others walked out motivated to improve their game for the next opportunity to be seen by a college coaching staff. The coaching staff of Wendy Schuller, Bryce Currie, Cody Bench and Nakia Arquette are all passionate about Eastern Washington and want to help their program make a run at winning the Big Sky. I always appreciate the hospitality at EWU and it is always great to be in the gym watching hard working players.
