Continue ReadingThe rebound can often be the most critical play in a game. It might an offensive rebound that leads to an easy put back or a kick out for a 3 pointer. It might be a defensive rebound that secures the big stop at the end of a game. A small team that wants to run always has to secure that defensive rebound first. Not matter what it is, every team needs that glass cleaner to secure the key boards. Here are the rebounders that will influence the MVC race this year.
- Bella LaPorta is a 6’0 2021 forward from Highland. Bella is a very athletic player that averaged 7.7 rebounds per game last year. She excels at volleyball too and uses those skills to high point missed shots. Bella was able to gather 110 offensive rebounds last year that led to numerous easy baskets.
- Anna Hall is a 5’11 2020 forward from Civic Memorial. Anna is as strong as they come and uses this strength to fight for the ball. She averaged 9.4 rebounds total and was able to get over 4 offensive rebounds per game. Anna was one of only 8 players in the St. Louis area to get over 300 rebounds for the season. As a senior this year she expects to have another outstanding season.
- Alyssa Powell is a 5’10 2022 forward from Triad. Alyssa is a very athletic player that gets off the floor quickly. She has a high level motor that allows her to gather rebounds on effort alone. Alyssa averaged over 4 rebounds per game with inconsistent minutes as a freshman. She will put up much bigger numbers in her sophomore campaign.
- Abby Manns is a 5’7 2020 guard from Jerseyville. Abby is a very unique player that led her team in rebounding as a junior. She has very long arms and does a good job of securing the ball in traffic. It is not often you have a guard lead your team in rebounding. Abby is a fighter that should have a strong senior season.
- Heather Albers is a 5’10 2020 forward from Waterloo. Heather is not the biggest player on the floor in most cases. She might have one of the biggest hearts. Heather is the kind of player that will run through a brick wall to get a rebound. She is very comfortable with contact and will get physical to get position. Heather does a very good job of going to get the ball instead of waiting for it to come to her.
- Sophia Loden is a 5’11 2023 forward from Mascoutah. Sophia has not played one minute of varsity basketball yet. She has earned this spot by leading her team in rebounding during the summer. Sophia plays AAU, attends many camps and trains consistently with PureSweat. She is athletic and rebounds well based on desire and effort. She is one to watch moving over the next 4 years.
Highland and CM both have the depth to run multiple 6 ft players in and out of the game. While we have highlighted their top rebounders in this article they both have 2-3 other girls that will help control the boards. If Jerseyville can make a run at them they will need to be able to rebound with them. As Triad, Mascoutah and Waterloo hope to be in the top tier of the league they will need to be able to finish defensive possessions by clearing the boards.
