Continue ReadingI usually pick teams that are in the driver’s seat as far as heading to the state tournament, several things have to happen and one is for those teams not to have injuries to key players. I also pick a group that I consider sleepers because once you get to the playoffs, anything can happen and North Shore’s mix of veteran seniors and a couple of freshmen I’ll be adding to the Texas 2023 Watch List
Donalyn Johnson & LaLa KennedyDonalyn Johnson impressed me a freshman, you can’t teach some of the things she has and one is she will not be outworked. She does whatever is asked of her and although she’s an undersized post, she manages to make things happen. Count on her teammate, fellow senior Ashley Green to give much needed help on the inside as well as super soph J’Nyla Kennedy, or just Lala who will be added to the Texas 2022 list. Zaida Burris is a returning varsity player but help is coming with role players like Cecilia Uvalle, Ebonie Sallie as well as a big boost Jerimya Buchanan
Cy’Maya ColquittThe progression I saw over the summer from Cy’Maya Colquitt and Makayla Patterson was staggering. Colquitt is another battler that scored multiple ways during club season but what I’ve always loved since she was MS player was her intensity, she simply brings “it” on both ends of the court. Patterson has been around forever watching her older sister Chastity, finally spelled it correctly, go off forever and she also had a chance to watch first hand the importance of running the one where she has become more of a prototype PG that reads defenses, controls tempo and sets teammates up for baskets. They battled Cy Creek to the end during the semifinals at the TSU Team Camp and with their depth, like I said, they are definitely a sleeper
Crishelle WashingtonCrishelle Washington caught my eye in middle school, so much energy, diving on the floor and playing with a smile as I watched her dropping the long ball with ease. She can run the 1 and 2, plus she can sing and evidently dance as well because she can maneuver around defenses attacking the basket. Being able to catch and shoot, accurately is always a plus, she’ll join LaLa on the 2022 upgrade. I mentioned a couple of 2023 being added to the Watch List and Ariana Masters has always brought something new to the table. She loves and thinks the game but her passion is only part of it. Her energy on both ends, she actually loves to defend and she’s showing me a lot offensively so this will be enjoyable. Shalayne Gould is on the verge of something big, amazing upside coupled with what she brings to the table now, this freshmen duo will be be putting up numbers soon, archive what I say in your memory banks because I see it coming
