Continue ReadingAshlyn Sturdy is a 5’8 2020 guard from Tri County Sangamon Valley. She played her AAU ball with the Illinois Pizzaz 17u team. Her career numbers for TCSV include 1,437 points, 405 rebounds, 395 assists and 382 steals. She is the career leader in all categories except rebounds. Ashlyn is scoring at a 17.5 per game clip on her career. She has been a force all the way through high school.
Ashly and her Pizzaz team had a great summer winning one tournament and advancing to the championship game in another. Like many standout players, Ashlyn plays a different role on her Pizzaz team than her TCSV team. During the summer she is able to feed off her talented team more than she does in the school season. Ashlyn can run the point guard spot and distribute but she will hurt you if you decide to assume she cannot score. At the Nike tournament of champions she hit 13/18 from the 3 point range. She does a great job playing defense and rebounding from her guard spot.
During the summer the school team played a very challenging schedule. While they only won about 50% of the games, there is no shame in that for a 2A team playing mostly 3A and 4A teams. For her school team Ashlyn needs to be much more aggressive on the offensive end. She is capable of being a big scorer and her team needs that from her. Ashlyn has very good leadership skills and must really use those to help her teammates prepare for the big postseason games coming in February. The team hopes to defend their Macon County tourney title and win a Regional.
Ashlyn does not rest on her laurels. She is a realistic player that knows she must get stronger and more explosive to succeed in college. She is always working on getting better with her left hand. Another point of emphasis is to finish better when she gets in the lane. Ashlyn is the type of player that can and will do anything to win. She knows in college that her role will be whatever the team needs. Her strength is in her ability to pass the ball and get others involved. In college she may be left alone just like on her Pizzaz team and if so she will be ready to bury the shot.
Ashlyn is very level headed. College coaches will love this about her.She seems to have a grasp of what she is looking for. Ashlyn wants to be at a school with a strong Science program as she plans on a Chemistry/ Pre Med major. She knows she will prefer being at a smaller school and has taken many unofficial visits to get a feel for different schools. She wants to have a good balance of academics and athletics.
Ashlyn really appreciated the team culture with the Pizzaz. The culture was very positive and she formed many strong relationships with her team. This has really helped her understand what she is looking for at the next level. Ashlyn is still very open in the recruiting process and has no specific time frame to make a decision. Her level headed approach to life and basketball shows through in her handling of the recruiting process.
TCSV will be fun the watch this year. Ashlyn is capable of carrying a team on her back when she gets hot, so watch for them come tourney time. Ashlyn is a recruit that any college would be lucky to get. She will be a winner in life and basketball will help provide the education to get there.
