This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Back 2 School Jam presented by PrimeTime Sports in my hometown of Plano, Texas. I got to watch a ton of players who have received little to no coverage thus far in their high school careers. Here are four under the radar prospects who caught my eye.
Kamen Wong – 2022 PG (Lady Dragonfly) Frisco Liberty HS – I got to watch Wong play with a different club earlier this month. She showed me more of her scoring ability this time around. She took over in the second half of the championship game. Lady Dragonfly basically allowed Wong to play isolation ball for most of the second half, and it worked. She was able to get to the basket at will en route to a to a first-place finish for her and her team.
Despite taking on more responsibility as a scorer, Wong remained a highly effective facilitator. She knows how to manipulate the defense. She is an extremely accurate passer in drive and kick scenarios. Wong has all the necessary tools to be a great point guard. The fact that I’ve seen her operate as the best player on two different teams backs that up.
A’Cya Narcisse – 2023 PG (Lady Drive Nation) – Narcisse is a silent assassin when she is on the court. She rarely shows emotion. She’s calm, cool, and collected at all times. Narcisse has a really smooth style to her game. She showed that she can score in a variety of ways, but she is at her best when she is attacking the basket. She glides to the rim and likes to utilize her euro step to get easy lay ups.
Lady Drive Nation rosters are typically loaded with talent. They are one of the more prominent clubs in the DFW area. Taking that into consideration, Narcisse seemed to play well with other good basketball players. She is good at finding her bigs down low and making sure that they get their touches. I think it’s always a positive to see a gifted young scorer be willing to defer to other teammates.
Olivia Cox – PG (CLB) – Cox is a tremendous floor general. She operates as the quarterback for her team. She is a great ball handler and uses her handles to weave through defenses. Cox excels at playing in transition and leading the break. However, she showed that she can be just as effective playing at a slower pace.
Cox slices through defenses with ease. She mostly uses this ability to find open teammates in the low post or in the corners. She is an insanely accurate passer too. Watching her get inside and dump it off to a big down low gave me serious Steve Nash vibes. There are few things I enjoy more than watching a crafty passer. Additionally, Cox is a solid shooter from range and a good defender out on the perimeter.
Abby Walsh – 2024 Combo Guard (AD-Elite 2024) – Walsh has a lot of offensive skills at her disposal. She is a creative finisher on the drive and welcomes contact. She is fearless with the rock. I had a lot of fun watching her play. She is an entertainer when she is on the court, but not in an unsportsmanlike way. Walsh does not take herself too seriously, which is refreshing to see in contrast to all of the egos that exist in youth sports.
Walsh is a combo guard who has numerous ways to score. She finishes well through contact and is an excellent free throw shooter when she gets to the line. That said, I think I was most impressed with her shooting. I saw her hit a couple of step back threes, one of which was pretty contested. Walsh is going to be a stud once she reaches high school.
