Continue ReadingThe Reign the Plains MAYB exposure tournament drew coaches from approximately 16 colleges, including my undergraduate alma mater Western Colorado University, to get a last summer look at some of the 2020 crop. For most of the players this was the last weekend of their summer club ball career. Below are notes on players who showed some emergence from the crowd of 2020s this tournament and made arguments with their play that they should get future attention.
Addison Campbell, 5’6″, G, Hoxie, Wheat State Elite – Loecker 2020 – Over three games Campbell was 4/7 behind the arc. In addition to being a substantial perimeter threat she has the ability to score in traffic and collect. The three game statistics show her averaging 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Wheat State Elite 2020 Loecker’s Laniah Randle and Ohlde Elite 2020 Yellow’s Chloe Carter await the ball for a sideline inbounds play.Chloe Carter, 5’9″, G/F, Topeka Seaman, Ohlde Elite Yellow 2020 – Carter showed the ability to put points on the board whether from the free throw line, 11/14 in one game, or from the perimeter. Has the size and handles to play four positions. She averaged 11 points (2/5 from three) for two games.
Mallory Cowman, 6’2″, C, Circle, Kansas United 2021 – Good turn around jumper in the lane. Showed surprising transition speed at times. Is a hustler and banger who posts up strongly and isn’t afraid to lay some wood on someone. Showed good hands and athleticism on as a trailer in transition. Cutting down the pipe she caught a lofted down-the-pipe entry from the wing, took dribbles, laid it in. For three game averaged a consistent 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Alleigh Kramer, 5’7″, PG, Nemaha Central, Wheat State Elite – Kramer 2020 – While I have seen Alleigh play a couple times over the summer I did not get the chance to watch her at Reign the Plains. With that being said the two game statistic averages of 6.5 points (1/1 from three), 1.5 assists, and 6.5 steals are reflective of her play on both ends of the court.
Emily Laham, 5’7″, G, Maize, Next Level Eclipse 2020 McCorry – Stand out abilities include strength in defensive rotation in the half court and defensive smarts in transition. The latter shined when soft defending a basket attack to set herself up for a blocked shot. Statistical highlight was a 15 point (1/3 from three), 3 steal, 3 assist game.
Lucy Lally, 5’11”, PF, Basehor-Linwood, Lady Prospects 17U – An active, physical defensive presence. Showed three point range in addition to end-to-end speed. For two games averaged 5 points (1/4 from three) and 4 rebounds.
Gaby Martinez, 5’6″, PG/2, Manhattan, Ohlde Elite Yellow 2020 – Sees the floor well with a high IQ. While she can score off the drive she also looks to kick out to open teammates on the perimeter. Has a strong motor, is scrappy, and solid speed. For two games averaged 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Sydney Nilles, 5’8″, G, Derby, Ohlde Elite Pink 2020 – Quick, fast defender who showed good transition smarts. Often draws opposing team’s strongest scoring guards to defend. Has the ability to score from the perimeter and off the dribble drive but consistently shines defensively. Statistical highlight was a 20 point (3/4 from three), 3 rebound, 3 steal game.
Allie Ostermann, 5’9″, PG, Manhattan, Ohlde Elite Yellow 2020 – An active, physical defensive presence. Showed three point range in addition to end-to-end speed. For two games averaged 5 points (1/4 from three) and 4 rebounds.
Alyvia Owens, 6’0″, F, Buhler, Wheat State Elite – Loecker 2020 – Owens’ activity on the floor is reflected in her statistics. She competes fiercely and with strength inside. She averaged nearly 8 points, 7 rebounds, and an assist over three games.
Sophia Purcell, 5’7″, PG, Hayden Catholic, Lady Prospects 17U – Showed leadership needed from her position and the ability to score off the dribble. A standout play was a left-to-right baseline drive against a defender that she turned into a reverse layup. Averaged 5 points (1/2 from three), 2 assists, and a steal.
Josie Weishaar, 5’10”, G, Jefferson County North, Lady Prospects 17U – Showed the ability to go end-to-end off the rebound and then drop a dime for a teammate to finish. A three point shooting threat. For two games averaged 16 points (2/4 from three), 5 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Lacy Whitcomb, 5’6″, PG/2, Shawnee Mission South, Lady Prospects 17U – Knocking down a quick, corner, catch-and-shoot three off an in-bounds pass stood out. Her activeness on both ends of the floor is reflective of her two game statistical averages of 6.5 points (3/8 from three), 4.5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists.
