Continue ReadingThe final weekend of summer ball for a healthy slice of Kansas’ talented 2020s was spent with their clubs at The Reign the Plains MAYB exposure tournament held at Wichita Sports Forum. Coaches from approximately 16 colleges and many high schools enjoyed strong efforts from many of the players. Below are notes on players who stood out during the two day event event.
Aubree Dewey, 5’7″, PG, Plainville, Wheat State Elite 2020 – Loecker – Dewey shined in the tournament in a variety of ways. She showed off her wicked quickness and speed, great court vision, ability to beat people with the dribble drive, and elevation on her jump shot. She was a nightmare to defend for every team that stepped on the court. Three game statistics show 10.3 points (4/7 from three), 4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. Dewey committed to Washburn University.
Ariyana Grassity, 5’4″, PG, Highland Park, Team KC Hoops – Grassity was arguably the fastest and quickest point guard at the event. While she works to get her teammates involved she showed the ability to be a dominant scorer when she needs to. That includes pulling up from 30 feet away to get nothing but net. Down by 22 mid-way through the second half against Wheat State Elite – Ferguson (Chaos) she scored 11 straight points, including a trio of threes, to pull her team to within 11. Hitting another a short bit later made it 14 straight of her team’s points, including 4/5 from three in the stretch. While I wasn’t able to get full game statistics her averages for two other games were 9 points (3/12 from three), 4 rebounds, and an assist.
Taylor Jameson, 5’5″, PG, Wichita Heights, Ohlde Elite 2020 Pink – With her speed, quickness, and ability to anticipate Jameson is a strong 1-on-1 back court defender. And with her hand speed, she is a threat to get a steal anytime. Offensively, she has three point range and the ability to create off the dribble. Two game statistics show an average of 5.5 points (1/5 from three), a steal, and a assist.
Katie Horyna, 5’9″, PG, Liberal, Ohlde Elite 2020 Pink – Horyna is a terrific shooter with an ability to set others up for good shots. She is also very solid defensively. Two game statistics show an average of 11.5 points (5/9 from three), 4.5 rebounds, 3 assists. Horyna is committed to Abeline Christian University.
Hannah Landwehr, 5’7″, G, Bishop Carroll, Next Level Eclipse 2020 – McCorry – Landwehr is a lethal three point threat with the handles and quickness to create her own shot or to find the open shooter off an across-the-lane drive. She also showed good hands in catching a pass in traffic while slicing down the lane from the high elbow. Two game statistics show an average of 10 points (5/7 from three).
Gabbie Posch, 5’9″, PG/2, Hutchinson, Ohlde Elite 2020 Pink – Posch catches a great amount of attention as a shooter. Rightfully so, she is a good mid-range and perimeter shooter. She also has a quick first step to get to the lane. Against very strong defenders Posch continued to shine in a category coaches love to see – turnovers. Posch does not turn the ball over whether against double teams in the back court or strong half court pressure. Two game statistics show an average of 7.5 points (5/14 from three), 3 rebounds. Posch is committed to Newman University.
Emily Ryan, 5’10”, PG, Central Plains, Wheat State Elite – Ferguson (Chaos) – Perhaps the most impressive thing I enjoyed seeing in watching Ryan is observing how she is affected when her shot is not falling. For instance, against Ohlde Elite Pink 2020 she did not start connecting until just six minutes remained in the game. What shown was she was not affected. She kept taking the same shots, attacking the basket when given the opportunity, and getting the ball to teammates. She still defended, rebounded, and competed. Nothing was forced. Averages for two games were 20 points (5/11 from three), five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Ryan has committed to Iowa State University.
