Each player is a bit different but all of them have the potential to be special. In this article I will cover some of the girls to watch in the paint this year.
- Shania Nunn is a 6’0 2020 forward from Belleville West. Shania has been one of the players to watch in this conference the past two years. She has expanded her game to be able to more consistently hit the outside shot. Shania has made a living in the paint with quick moves and great athleticism. She is quick to the ball on rebounds and relentless in her effort.
- Tyana Lovelace is a 6’0 2021 post from O’Fallon. Tyana is very strong and athletic. This allows her to beat girls to the spot to get position and then hold that position. She finishes well around the rim. Tyana can continue to improve her range and free throw shooting to complete her game. She should step into the starting 5 this year and have a big season.
- Kristyn Mitchell is a 6’0 2020 4/5 from Collinsville. Kristyn is an ideal stretch 4/5 as she has a very good outside shot. She led the team in 3 pointers last year as a junior. She has worked hard to improve her game off the bounce this off season. In addition to finishing well in the post she can now beat girls from the elbow area with either hand which makes her hard to guard.
- Hannah Mitchell is a 6’0 2020 5 from Belleville East. Hannah is a great leader and has the potential to really finish off her career on a strong note. She played varsity basketball as freshman but then tore an ACL her sophomore year. Last year she really was still trying to get comfortable back in her groove. Hannah had a very productive summer with the Evolution Elite. She rebounded very well and was a scoring threat in the paint. Hannah should be back on the radar for smaller colleges looking for a post player.
- Katelynne Roberts is a 6’2 2021 post from Edwardsville. Katelynne has shown the potential to be an excellent defender and rebounder for the Lady Tigers. She moves well for her size showing an ability to run the floor. She can use both hands on offense to finish in the paint. Katelynne can be a bit stiff or methodical at times so she can improve her offensive game by continuing to work on strength and coordination. At the very least she can give her team a rim protector that will alter shots.
- Amelia Bell is a 6’0 2021 4/5 from O’Fallon. Amelia is athletic and has a non stop motor. She will most likely see more time away from the basket this year so she is working on her ball skills. If Amelia develops her ball handling and a reliable 15 foot jumper she will take her game to another level. I love her enthusiasm and toughness. Nobody competes harder than Amelia.
There is a strong contingent of posts in this conference. There are girls in the 2020 and 2021 classes that are definite next level players. It will be fun to watch the battles in the paint in this conference. The teams looking to knock off Edwardsville will definitely be relying on their post players to get them there.
