Trumbull County – named for former Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull – is a large settlement that contains pieces of the Mahoning River and major cities in Warren and Youngstown. It is also home to a key industry base in the state of Ohio, employing a large blue-collar workforce. There is big-time depth on the girls basketball courts in Trumbull County, with dozens of star players returning around the area.
Let’s take a look at a number of talented players from Trumbull County.
Bella Zirzow – 6’0 Forward – Bristol – Class of 2022
After only 1 year of high school basketball, Zirzow has already flashed glimpses of the total package as a basketball player. At over 6 feet tall, she is a tremendous ball-handler and knock-down shooter from well beyond the 3-point line. Bella uses that size to grab double-digit rebounds quite often – racking up double-double after double-double during her freshman season.
Emma Gumont is one of the best multi-sport athletes in the area and a large reason behind Champion’s success on the hardwood. (Photo Credit: Tribune Chronicle)Emma Gumont – 5’11 Forward – Champion – Class of 2021
Regardless of the sport, Emma Gumont has built a reputation for playing her best in big games. Last winter – after a number of high-scoring performances, Emma (already a state champion in softball) led her basketball team to a district title. She is big and strong and has no problem finishing through contact – in the half-court or in transition.
Caitlyn Condoleon – 5’7 Guard – Warren JFK – Class of 2020
Caitlyn is already a multi-time All-Ohio selection who has scored well over 1000 career points during her HS career. She is a good jump-shooter with a quick release. Caitlyn also finishes inside of the paint with a variety of runners and floaters. Warren JFK has not had the deepest teams during Caitlyn’s time there – so everything that she has achieved has been done against junk defenses and defenses focused specifically to stop her.
Sharda Williamson – 5’7 Guard – Liberty – Class of 2020
Williamson is one of the most dynamic scorers in all of Northeast Ohio. The guard is explosive and does a nice job of creating her shot. With that being said – she is also very dangerous as a shooter with her feet set. Sharda is an active defender who causes turnovers at a high rate.
Marissa Ventura – 5’6 Guard – Maplewood – Class of 2022
Marissa was named MVP of the Northeastern Athletic Conference underclassmen All-Star game last winter. She is a good scorer who earned All-Ohio honors during her freshman season. In addition to her scoring exploits, she is a solid playmaker who is more than capable of adding a handful of assists on a given night.
Molly Howard and McDonald show no signs of slowing down. (Photo Credit: Tribune Chronicle)Molly Howard – 5’10 Forward – McDonald – Class of 2021
McDonald was one of the top teams in Trumbull County and one of the largest reasons behind that success was the play of Molly Howard. The long and lanky forward effects the game in so many ways that help her team win. Howard blocks shots, runs the floor well, finishes through contact at the rim and shoots a high percentage from the floor. Assuming her development continues, she is a nice college prospect.
Sophia Constantino – 5’5 Guard – McDonald – Class of 2021
Just like her running mate Molly Howard, Sophia Constantino played a huge part in the success that McDonald had last winter. Sophia is a guard who has a calming influence on her team. She makes her teammates better and has the potential to be one of the best guards to ever come through the school if she continues her upward trajectory. Constantino is an outstanding stand-still shooter with the ability to change the game with the 3-ball.
Ane’Ziah Fryer – 5’6 Guard – McKinley – Class of 2020
Fryer is an explosive combo-guard who is tremendous in transition. She is at her best attacking the rim and breaking down defenses – whether it be finishing in a variety of ways or drawing help-side and kicking to open shooters, she is great when she gets two feet in the paint. Fryer’s quickness makes her a handful on both ends of the court.
Kamarah Bender is one of the top scoring guards in Northeast Ohio. (Photo Credit: Tribune Chronicle)Kamarah Bender – 5’7 Guard – Warren Harding – Class of 2021
In 2018-2019, Bender had one of the top sophomore seasons in the state of Ohio. She finished with averages of 21 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and almost 1 block per game. Old-school basketball fans could probably refer to Kamarah as “the microwave”, because she can score a dozen points in the blink of an eye. She is a super athlete who has the scoring mindset needed to be the special player that she is.
Alexa Harkins – 5’8 Guard – Mineral Ridge – Class of 2020
It didn’t take long for Harkins to make a name for herself, as she scored 42 points in one of her first outings – back in 2016, as a freshman. Now, entering her senior year with over 1000 points, Harkins is adding to her already stellar legacy at Mineral Ridge. A strong guard who always seems to make the right play – Alexa has a quick release and great range on her jumper.
Bree Hutson – 5’6 Guard – Newton Falls – Class of 2021
Bree is a stat-stuffer. She is constantly in double-digits, but also can add 6-8 rebounds and a number of assists in a contest. At Newton Falls, Hutson has had the opportunity to play in some big games and she is usually up to the challenge. Hutson uses floaters, runners and a nice pull-up game to put the ball in the basket – she is also a quality stand-still shooter with her feet set.
