This past weekend, Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA played host to West Coast Elite’s Girls High Academic Super Bowl. There was a lot of talent in the building from the Class of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and even some from 2024.
The event ran from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. I was able to attend the event on Saturday, and here’s a look at some of the top players from the Class of 2021 that I saw.
1. Jayda Curry – Corona Centennial
Curry is quickly becoming one of the most explosive guards on the West Coast. She runs the break very well as either the ball-handler or off the ball to catch a pass. Very quick in transition that makes it difficult for defenders to keep up. She can finish too at the rim over defenders. Although she plays off ball a lot, she’s a very capable passer. Knows when to score and when to get her teammates involved. Uses fakes well to get to different spots on the floor.
2. Trinity San Antonio – Corona Centennial
San Antonio is a bit of a versatile player. She can play as a team’s primary ball-handler, or she can play off the ball and act as a major scoring threat. She gets out on the break ahead of the defense and she can finish well at the rim. She can rebound and initiate the break herself, going coast to coast. She has an explosive first step and shoots well from midrange. Good defender, deflects passes and gets steals. Good vision in terms of outlet passes in transition.
3. Tiah Sherman – Narbonne
Sherman is a solid facilitator. She is a crafty guard who is always looking for her teammates whether it’s on the break or in the half court. While her primary role is to be a playmaker, she also knows when to look for her shot and score. In the half court, she uses fakes well to get to the rim. Although she is a bit small in size, she attacks the rim and finishes well. She can also shoot well from three-point range.
4. Sammie Arnold – Palisades
Arnold is a just a solid player who makes little plays that don’t always show up on a stat sheet, plays that help teams win games. She isn’t afraid to dive on the floor for loose balls. She knows where to position herself and make herself available in the half court where she shoots pretty well from the three-point line. She battles hard for rebounds and she is a fairly good defender on ball. She’s poised to have a solid junior year.
5. Kalani Duplessis – Morningside
Duplessis’ skills and talent are very apparent, they just need to be refined a little bit. She’s got the tools to be a very good post player. She’s already a fairly decent rebounder. She has a size advantage over most other players. She’s a decent offensive rebounder, but one thing she could improve upon is keeping the ball high and going right back up with it instead of bringing it down. She has some raw skill in the post that with the right work, can be something special.
