This past weekend, Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA played host to West Coast Elite’s Girls High Academic Super Bowl. There was a lot of talent in the building from the Class of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and even some from 2024.
The event ran from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. I was able to attend the event on Saturday, and here’s a look at some of the top players from the Class of 2022 that I saw.
1. London Gamble – Westlake
Gamble has all the makings of being an elite scoring guard. She can score on the break or in a half court set. She has the ability to go coast to coast and finish a play. She moves well with the basketball, or off ball as well. She gets out quick in transition and has an array of moves to sidestep defenders. Good three-point shooter. On the defensive end, she is a great on ball defender. She also picks up the full 94 feet at times too.
2. Eliana Hall – Peninsula
Hall is a very versatile player on both ends of the court. Offensively, she can handle the ball and attack her defender off the dribble. She’s very decisive when she has the ball in her hands, she doesn’t hesitate and is quick making a play. When attacking the rim, she can finish well around defenders. She plays well in the high post. On the defensive end, she’s able to guard multiple positions. Good rebounder.
3. Layla-Simone Curry – Corona Centennial
The younger Curry is also a very versatile player. She can play multiple positions on the floor, she can play as a guard, a forward, and even some small ball center. She excels in transition whether it’s acting as the playmaker and finding teammates, or taking the ball herself and looking to score. She consistently gets out ahead of the defense. She can shoot the ball from distance. Good rebounder, particularly on the offensive end. Defensively, she doesn’t mind playing full-court defense.
4. Sakura Bradley – Liberty (NV)
Bradley is a quick guard that plays with a ton of energy. She’s plays very hard on both ends of the court. When looking for her teammates, she’s a willing and solid playmaker. When it comes to scoring, she can shoot well from the three-point line. She’s got a quick enough first step too to go by defenders and get all the way to the rim. It’s hard for defenders to keep her from getting into the lane. She’s a tough defensive player and is willing to make tough plays.
