This past weekend, Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA played host to West Coast Elite’s Girls High Academic Super Bowl. There was a lot of talent in the building from the Class of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and even some from 2024.
The event ran from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. I was able to attend the event on Saturday, and here’s a look at some of the top players from the Class of 2024 that I saw.
1. Serenity Johnson – Windward
Johnson may not be in high school just yet, but she’s clearly got the game for the next level. Playing against older players, the game looked easy to her. She can act as a team’s primary ball-handler. When running the break, she is constantly looking for her teammates and looking to make the right play. One of the major strengths of her game is three-point shooting. She’s a knockdown shooter especially when a defender is in her face.
2. Shea Joko – Hewes
Joko is pretty solid point guard for a young player. She runs the offense well, especially in half-court sets. She looks for her teammates to set them up for easy plays. Knows when to act as a facilitator and when to look for her own shot. When she looks to create for herself, she is deadly from long-range. She can pull-up on the break from three and she steps into her shot well.
3. Sheridan Kennedy – St. Gregory the Great
Kennedy has all the tools to develop into a solid scoring wing once she reaches the high school level. She already looks like a comfortable scorer even while playing against players older than her and already in high school. As an eighth-grader, she can already handle the ball well and attack her defender off the dribble. When she’s able to get into the paint, she can draw contact well and get herself to the free-throw line.
4. Anayla Anderson – Markham Middle School
Anderson also has the makings of being a good high school level scoring guard. She plays as her team’s main ball-handler and can run the offense smoothly. She’s very quick and can get out in transition ahead of the defense. As a very young player, she has a few impressive moves to sidestep defenders, including a little Euro-step and some ball fakes. She can get into the lane and get to the rim.
