5 Players to Watch:
(schools are as of last year – unless PGH is 100% certain that a player has enrolled elsewhere)
Shyanne Sellers – Aurora
Emma Brown – Copley
Adison Novosel – Revere
Kendall McCormick – Highland
Lizzie Bickar – Tallmadge
4 Thoughts:
Aurora had an outstanding season, finishing 24-2 and advancing to the regional tournament before falling to Canton GlenOak by a score 61-32. The Greenmen will need to replace Shayla Sellers and Haley Ross – both of whom are now playing collegiately. The good news for Aurora fans is that they return one of the top players in Ohio – Shyanne Sellers. Sellers averaged nearly 24 PPG last year and will be joined in the backcourt by Dylynn Lasky.
Similar to how Aurora has some outstanding seniors from last year to replace – Revere will need to find a way to find production that matches or exceeds that from departed players Taylor Rinn and Grace Hete. The two combined for over 30 PPG a season ago – Rinn is now at Point Park and Hete at Ohio Dominican. With that being said, if there is a player who can score in bunches, it’s returning junior Adison Novosel. Novosel scored over 14 PPG last winter for Dan Brown’s squad.
Greg Whitmer has stepped away from the Barberton program, but he was replaced by a familiar face – longtime Barberton fixture and former boys coach Ken Rector is taking over the Lady Magics program. Rector will start the process with Hailey Haywood and a solid group of kids who played JV last year and are ready to move up and contribute at the varsity level.
There are many outstanding players in the league that do not player for Aurora, Revere and Barberton. A few of these players who basketball fans should take notice of include Kendall McCormick from Highland, Emily Dente and Emma Brown from Copley, Lizzie Bickar from Tallmadge and Kassidy Fischer at Roosevelt.
3 Big Games:
Aurora @ Revere on January 4th
Aurora vs Wayne @ The Classic in the Country on January 20th
Highland @ Copley on February 5th
2 Fun Facts:
Aurora’s Shyanne Sellers is one of the top-ranked players in Ohio. She has recently released her “top 9 schools” – schools that she is considering to continue her career at collegiately. These schools – in no-specific order – include Michigan State, Indiana, Maryland, Florida State, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Louisville, UCLA and Purdue-Fort Wayne.
The American Division of the Suburban League has been pieced together over time. Copley joined the conference in 1949, Revere in 1958, Highland in 1976 (after an initial run in 1956-1957), Tallmadge in 1990 and Aurora, Barberton and Kent Roosevelt in 2015.
