This was an all star game type setting where good players are often playing out of position. Despite that, here are a few prospects that stood out to me and should have strong high school performances in their second years.
Destiny Holmes, St. Frances Academy, Combo Guard
Aggressive offensive player with speed. Very strong in transition as she can finish with both hands or fade to the corner for 3 point opportunities. She is shooting the long ball with confidence and making a respectable amount of them. She is a physical and active defender and takes zero plays off.
Daimoni Dorsey, St. Frances Academy
Daimoni is a tough and versatile two way player. She has a knack for mid range scoring and her 5’9″ size helps in that area. She straps up on defense, taking pride in not allowing baskets on her watch. Her ball handling skills have improved since last summer. I am not sure what her best position is, but she is a baller and every team needs someone like her in the rotation.
Anhiya Smith, River Hill
Anhiya has a very “mature” game for her age. She was really looking to facilitate in this game, and dished out some nice assists. She won a state championship last season with River Hill and was their go to closer in close games because she has a knack for hitting clutch shots. She is equipped with a steady handle and looks comfortable playing both guard spots. She is a good rebounder and excellent free throw shooter. Ms. Smith should be in the running for Howard county player of the year this season.
Tsion Smith, Mt. Carmel, Shooting Guard
Tsion closed out her summer with a strong performance at the Family Reunion event before heading down to Texas for the John Lucas 160 Camp. Always known for strong defense and scrappy play, Tsion has recently become one of the better shooters in her class. If she is left open for a corner three you can count it. She is a physical guard with nice footwork and a couple of strong post moves so she is a dual threat. Look for her to have a big season at her new school. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
Cori Barnes, St. Frances Academy, Shooting Guard
Cori is a three point specialist shooting guard with a quick release. There is no hesitation when she catches and releases. Her mid range game is emerging as she is learning to back smaller guards down and shoot over them, or pull up off the dribble. At 5’9″ she has good size and I was impressed with the way she used her body to bang with bigger players inside. Cori loves to run down players on the break and go for the big, emphatic block.
Mia Smith, 2022 Clarksburg, Wing
Mia is a long and wiry wing (5’11) with exceptional athleticism. She uses her vertical to rise up over defenders and get shots off. She has an excellent first step which she uses to explode past defenders. She is a smooth finisher at the rim with both hands and is pretty crafty in the paint. She played solid on ball defense and finished through contact for a couple of “and 1” situations.
