Continue ReadingThe 6-team Great West Activities Conference is composed of 1 Class 4A and 5 Class 3A schools. The league sent two teams to state tournaments in 2019: Ulysses to the 4A, Scott City to the 3A. Both lost in the first round. Seventeen players were selected for all-conference honors, ten of which return. Of the ten, seven are seniors. A lone junior returns as do two freshman.
In this article I will be taking a look at 2020 players that earned spots on Kansas Basketball Coaches Association all-state and/or all-Great West Activities Conference all-conference teams.
Hallie Vaughn, 5’6″, G, Colby, Ohlde Elite – In addition to being selected to the first team, Vaughn earned a 3A honorable mention all-state selection from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA). Vaughn has solid transition speed and shown 20′ perimeter range over the summer. Notable also his her ability to elevate on her jump shot. Vaughn is ranked #103.
Lyndi Rumford, 5’11”, PF, Scott City – Rumford was selected to the first team. She is a strong, persistent rebounder on both ends of the floor who is able to score quickly inside or from beyond the arc quickly off the catch. Rumford has good transition speed. While currently unranked she is a lock to appear in the next refresh.
Emily Weathers, 5’10”, F, Scott City, Ohlde Elite – In addition to being selected to the first team, Weathers earned a 3A honorable mention all-state selection from the KBCA. This past season she averaged 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds. She also led her team in scoring (15 points) in the team’s first round loss in the 3A state tournament. With speed, solid ball skills, and size Weathers showed all summer that she can score on anybody from anywhere. The Emporia State University commit is ranked #13.
Taighe Weeter, SG, Goodland – A second team all-conference selection, Weeter has shown herself to be a solid perimeter threat including from beyond the arc. Her shooting ability opens opportunities to attack off the dribble to finish. She uses a eurostep well to get around defenders on the finish. Weeter is ranked #93.
Madison “Madi” Ruda, 5’9″, G, Holcomb – Ruda was selected to the second team. She has a diverse skill set: Sees the floor and jumps passing lanes well; elevates well; three point range; and can go end-to-end and finish under pressure. She also has some shot blocking ability. This past season she averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 steals, and 2.7 assists. Runa shot 42% from beyond the arc (42/100). Ruda is ranked #52.
Brittany Foss, 5’5″, G, Colby – Foss was selected as an honorable mention. She has good quickness with the ball and is a three point threat. Foss is currently unranked.
Madison Shapland, 5’6″, PG, Scott City – Shapland was selected as an honorable mention. She works the pick and roll well with posts and otherwise can make the good entry pass. With good speed and a strong motor, Shapland uses good transition vision to set teammates up. She also can pull up and knock the quick jumper down. Shapland is currently unranked.
