Continue ReadingContinuing to look ahead to the 2019-2020 season I decided to crunch some numbers to find players likely to have big years. Having looked at returning assist leaders earlier this month this time I began by looking at the leading, returning rebounders according to MaxPreps. Players were identified using the following criteria:
- Averaged greater than 8 rebounds per game;
- Gathered more than 175 rebounds in the season;
- Played a substantially high percentage of team’s games; and
- Had a field goal percentage of greater than 35%.
The resulting pool of 15 players was reduced to 10 by ranking players by percentage of offensive rebounds to total rebounds in consideration for offensive rebounds turning into second chance points. Listed below in order by average rebounds per game, the resulting pool of players were arguably under-recognized despite strong 2018-2019 seasons. They bear watching this coming season.
Jenna Pfau, 2020, 5’10”, F, Oskaloosa – With 268 rebounds in 20 games Pfau averaged a whopping 13.4 rebounds per game. She also scored 8.9 points per game on 36% field goal shooting, tied for the lowest percentage of the 10, and had a 37.3% offensive to total rebounds percentage. Pfau was a Northeast Kansas League honorable mention selection.
Kenzie Strathman, 2022, 6’0″, F, Wetmore – Strathman had one of the biggest freshman years in the state this past season. Averaging a double-double, 12.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, on 42% field goal shooting, she had the third highest percentage of offensive to total rebounds at 43.4%. Strathman was a Twin Valley League second team selection.
Kim Whetstone, 2020, 5’11”, PF, Bonner Springs – Whetstone had a big 2019 that saw her generate 12.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game on 47% field goal shooting. Her offensive to total rebounds was an impressive 42.3%. Already committed to play volleyball for the University of Kansas, Whetstone earned 5A honorable mention all-state from the Topeka Capital Journal.
Allie Cassel, 2020, 5’8″, Blue Valley (Randolph) – Cassel also averaged a double-double, 13.6 points and 10 rebounds per game on 44% field goal shooting. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was 39.3%. Cassel was a Twin Valley League second team selection.
Anna Carter, 2020, 6’0″, Decatur Community – Carter averaged 13.1 points and 9.3 points rebounds per game on 36% field goal shooting, tied for the lowest percentage of the 10. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was 41%. Carter was a Northwest Kansas League second team selection.
Carson Walter, 2021, 5’9″, Lincoln – Walter averaged 10.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game on 40% field goal shooting. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was 37%. Walter was a Northern Plains League third team selection.
Mallory Callihan, 2021, 5’8″, Clifton-Clyde – Callihan averaged 9 rebounds and 8 points per game on 51% field goal shooting, the second highest of the 10. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was a chart-topping 53.3%.
Thea Alschner, 2020, 6’1″, F, Chanute – Alschner averaged 12 points and 8.9 rebounds per game on chart-topping 57% field goal shooting. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was 40.1%. Alschner was a Southeast Kansas League second team selection.
Krysten Bartlett, 2020, 5’10”, F, Central Christian – Bartlett averaged 10.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game on 45% field goal shooting. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was 40.4%. Bartlett earned 1A honorable mention all-state from the Topeka Capital Journal.
Holly Brochmeier, 2020, 5’8″, Rural Vista – Brochmeier averaged 8.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game on 47% field goal shooting. Her offensive to total rebounds percentage was a second best 50.8%. Brochmeier was a Wheat State League honorable mention selection.
