St. Frances Academy: This team showed us why they are IAAM A Conference title defenders, for even without top ranked all-star, Angel Reese, SFA handily defeated the Scorpions, 51-33. With three players in double-digit scoring– #25 (14 points), #4 (15 points), and #1, Aniya Gourdine (13 points)– SFA showed their defense creates offensive opportunity. Applying early pressure to Scorpion guards, SFA seemed to never miss a beat, frequently capitalizing on forced turnovers. Every player on SFA seemed focused on both ends of the court, impressively limiting the Scorpions to only 13 points in the first half. With their 4-0 start in fall ball, this team is just scratching the surface of the damage they will likely inflict this season.
Maryland Shooting Stars 2020: Despite this being the Shooting Stars’ first performance in this league, they left it all out on the floor. Scoring 53 points collectively, they limited their opponent, PV Thunder 17U, to 31 points, keeping them scoreless in the 2nd quarter, and limiting them to only 2 points in the 4th quarter. Dominating the paint defensively, standout forward/guard #4 Trinity Klock, and center #13 forced many turnovers in the paint, while their guards, #21 and #20, had several steals at the perimeter. This quick defensive play helps fuel the Shooting Stars’ go-to, fast-break offense. The tiring nature of a fast-break offense did not seem to thwart the Shooting Stars’ efforts on the defensive end either.
Mount de Sales Academy: Finally grasping their first fall ball win, this MDS team showed that they are not to be underestimated. This team uses it’s attacking defense to drive its offense. Trapping The Mount players both with menacing guard play and impenetrable defense in the paint, led by senior guard/forward, #10 Megan Matsko, MDS impressively limited their opponents to 16 points total. Despite being undersized and relying heavily on scrappy guard play, do not underestimate this team’s ability to hang around ‘til the end.
