Continue ReadingTwo years ago, after a last place finish in the very competitive WCAC Conference, Archbishop Carroll Girls Basketball Coach Edythe White needed to make a swift change in her recruiting process in order to be at least competitive in the conference. Fast forward to 2019 where the Lions finished 15-15 and 6-12 in the conference and lost to a very talented Bishop McNamara program. Now, the next mission for the program is to have an above .500 record and get deeper in the playoffs. “I figured that skill players really help your program out, so I had to go on the recruiting trail and get girls that were not only good athletes, but also good on the academic side. My coaching staff and I had to get more aggressive on the recruiting trail so compete with the McNamara’s and the Ireton’s of the conference” Coach White said.
The Lions enter the 2019-2020 season returning three starters that not only are rising Sophomores and Juniors, but Coach White can build a core around for the future. The first returner is rising Junior Amari Jones. Amari has been on the Varsity squad the last two years and what Coach White likes about Amari is her calmness on the court. “When tensions are high in the game, Amari is always the one keeping a level head and that is what we need from a leader, she can find the open person on the floor always but with our conference being so competitive, it is the little traits in players that help our team. Coach White also added that the biggest skill she wants to see Amari improve on is just simply to score more. The second returning starter is Rising Sophomore Taniya Lawson. Taniya can play the two, three, or four position on the court because of her versatility. Coach White has a lot of praise for Taniya after one year on Varsity. “She is probably our best three-point shooter on the team, she has a nice body size but being an underclassman, she is still trying to figure out the game.” The final returning starter is rising Sophomore Alexis Black. Alexis can play the two or three position and can slash to the basket, but Coach White loves one big skill about Alexis. “Alexis’s speed kills, she is so darn fast on the court, an opponent’s breakaway layup is never a gimme when Alexis is on the court.”
Amari Jones looks to propel the Lions to the top of the WCAC Conference
Coach White has a key contributor off the bench this season in rising Senior Kayden Cromartie. Kayden is 6’2 and a dual sport athlete in Volleyball as well but Coach White loves her work ethic heading into the season. “I have loved Kayden’s work ethic from the very beginning. Although she did not play much last year, she has still worked her tail off in the gym to get where she is for this season, I am very excited to see her size be an asset for our team.”
Alexis Black is one of three returning starters for the Lions this season.
As we discussed the WCAC Conference, Coach White focused on one key thing for her team, ” We are in the position to compete NOW. We have the tools and skills to finish in the top half of the conference and turn some heads and I don’t know who we will upset this year, but just be prepared for some.” The Lady Lions will be traveling to South Carolina during the holidays for the St. Pius X Holiday Classic as well as participate in the She Got Game Classic.
