Continue ReadingI wanted to update my preseason rankings after seeing who would be playing at SkilledUpElite’s Fall Showcase for a number of reasons and I was truly glad because I love seeing players in different settings and systems and no matter what the situation is, those who show that they can stand out regardless will do quite well at the next level. I’ve updated and added to 2020 and 2021 rankings as well as 2022 and 2023 Watch Lists but don’t fret, I’ll be at numerous tournaments before district including the Texas Invitational, Peggy Whitley, Katy ISD and FBISD who are the heavy hitters in the Houston area as well as Sandra Meadows Classic and Mansfield Spring Creek Invitational so I’ll be updating again to start 2020 off with a bang. I wanted to start off the Fall Showcase recap with a couple of duos who are nationally ranked and will play huge roles in how far their teams go
RyLee Grays and Jada MaloneRori Harmon and Kyndall Hunter (Cy Creek) the 2021 duo solidified not only their “best in the area” back-court but one of the best in not only Texas but the country. Not sure where they are ranked nationally, I respect others opinions however personal experiences tell me that everyone doesn’t see things the same way and the end of the day, I’m right. I recall catching Nina Norman (Jersey Village) and Lindsey Harding (Cy Fair) in a club basketball game when I first started paying attention and watching them in the back court was like magic as they knew where each other were and where they’d be, ahead of the play. Norman was on the first girl’s McDonald’s All American team and starred at Texas while Harding was an All American at Duke and played 10 years in the WNBA. Both Harmon and Hunter are explosive scorers, mid to long range, it doesn’t matter and watching them make acrobatic and clutch shots was one of the highlights of the weekend. I’m not even going to mention I called them #D1Locks before they even played middle school, well I guess I did
Jada Malone and RyLee Grays (The Village School) You never know how things are going to turn out and watching Malone in the gym as a youngster who was watching her older sister play, I didn’t know how this basketball thing would go with her, especially since she was my connection for Girl Scout Cookies but over the years, she grew and kept growing and in middle school, I saw it coming and her second to none work ethic kept in coming. Now at 6’4, she’s one of the top “bigs” in the 2021 class and by big, depending on the system, she can the 3 or 4 easily as she’s added the long ball to her game. She’s overpowering in the paint, runs the floor and finishes numerous times after rebounding and getting the ball back and the scary part is she still has upside. Grays had me going back and correcting the spelling of her number, it took over an hour on the numerous articles I’ve written about her but after “the move” and the aftermath, it had to be done. The freshman did a drop step and scored with three players hanging on her and her enthusiasm afterwards told me she has arrived and her 6’3 height gives them a legitimate #BCS Twin Towers
