Some of Nebraska’s best players come from this class, and it is a deep, strong group with numerous players holding Division I offers in their hands before entering their junior year. Today, we’ll take a look at the second half of the 2021’s.
Kali Staples (Nebraska Pride/ Broken Bow High School)- From the edge of the Sand Hills comes Kali Staples, a player who basketball junkies need to get to know. A 5’7″ point guard with great vision and court awareness who has already broken the school record for assists by the end of her sophmore year, Staples has a simple game that is not flashy; she just finds a way to win. A high level competitor who had a very good summer, she has a career 3:1 assist to turnover ratio. With Staples running the point, Broken Bow has a great chance to return back to the state tournament this year.
Kate Dilsaver (Cornhusker Shooting Stars/ Lincoln Southwest)- A three sport star for the SilverHawks, this 5’10” athlete is a winner. A integral part of their 2018 state runner-up basketball team, Dilsaver won two golds at the Nebraska state track and field championships last spring. Great at getting to the rim and a very good defender, Dilsaver is an aggressive player who creates alot of offense from her defensive activity. Dilsaver needs to continue her catch and shoot skills, but her pull up game makes up for it. Programs looking for great athletes need to look at Dilsaver.
Kaysia Woods (Team Factory/ Lincoln High School)- One of the most sought after 2021’s in the state, this 6’0″ wing player can pretty much do it all on the offensive end. Woods can takes smaller players inside and stretch bigger players outside, she has a hard to find upside and versatility. Woods can also shoot the three pointer, and is a good ball handler for her size. After the summer, Woods has eight offers on the table, including Xavier and Kansas State. Look for Woods to dominate Nebraska high school ball for the next two winters.
Kyra Fischer (All Nebraska Attack/ South Sioux City High School)- Another in the long line of great guards to come out the state’s most prominent high school program, Fischer is a 5’10” wing player who is an outstanding shooter. With her strong frame, Fischer needs to take advantage of her strength and look to attack the rim and draw contact to balance her shooting ability. Although she has no offers at this time, Kyra projects to be a Division II player, or, with an improved off the bounce game and improved athleticism, could be a lower level Division I prospect.
Liviya Wier (Nebraska Pride/ McCook High School)- Wier is a 5’7″ point guard with an outstanding work ethic. A good shooter who is also a very good on ball defender, Wier’s potential continues to grow. Wier can also put the ball on the floor and draw contact, and her work ethic will make her a very good prospect in the panhandle the next two winters.
Maddie Portwine (Cornhusker Shooting Stars/ York High School)- One of Class B’s most explosive scorers, her length and size and both ends of the floor gives teams fits. Portwine is a good version with a good motor who can get to the rim. At the next level, she probably projects to be a two at the next level. Like Dilsaver, she is looking at alot of Division II offers and perhaps low-level Division I offers in her future.
Sidney Swanson (All Nebraska Attack/ West Point-Beemer High School)- Swanson, perhaps more than any player in their program, had the most beneficial summer of anyone in the ANA program. According to Zach Isherwood, she really “popped” this summer. A player with a great motor and an outstanding on ball defender, she is a high IQ player who is an outstanding facilitator. Division II’s are already knocking on Swanson’s door, and more offers should come to this 5’7″ point guard.
Tate Norblade (Omaha Sports Academy/ Papillion LaVista South)- Norblade is a 5’8″ combo guard with a high IQ. Although slender, Norblade is an end to end player who can finish well after creating chaos on the defensive end. As she continues to develop her perimeter shot, Norblade’s upside only will increase as her ball skills improve. Tate could be a diamond in the rough for GPAC schools.
