Here are some teams that could show the most improvement from a season ago:
Richland
The Colts won 16 games a year ago and made it to the Region 1 final before losing to state-champion Kindred. The Colts will have to contend with the Vikings again but they should be one of the elite teams in Class B this winter. Richland returns every key player from a season ago including all-state guard Megan Roob who averaged 24 points per game and a host of rock-solid complementary players.
Oakes
Oakes is hardly coming from nowhere this winter as the Tornadoes won 18 games a year ago and showed an ability to compete against upper-echelon competition. Things should be even better this winter though as the Tornadoes return the top three scorers from last year’s team including all-state forward Nicole Schmitz and near double-double threat Sadie Hansen. With six of the top seven rotation players back, expect the Tornadoes to contend in Region 3.
St. John
The Woodchucks were solid last year, going 12-9. Things should be even better this winter as they return one of the best players in the region in junior forward Kendre Prouty. Prouty averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds a year ago as just a sophomore and should be in the mix for All-State honors. She’s joined by junior guard junior guard Raycee Reed, who averaged better than 11 points per game while knocking down 44 percent of her 3-pointers as a sophomore.
