Over the next several weeks, we will take a look at some of the players who saw their ranking rise since the first release back in April. The next few days, a look at 2020 kids.
2020 rising guards/forwards part 2
Destiny Leo (Eastlake North) – Coming in at #8 on our 2020 rankings, this Cleveland State commit had a season to remember in 2018-2019. Destiny was the sole member of the Class of 2020 to be named to the Division 1 All-Ohio 1st team by the state’s writers. Leo averaged over 29 points and 8 rebounds a night for Eastlake North – who finished 25-2 on the year.
Nyam Thornton (Africentric Early College) – Another high school basketball season meant another state championship for Columbus Africentric. Nyam Thornton (pictured above – Photo Credit: Shane Flanigan – ThisWeek News) was certainly one of the key contributors for the Nubians’ title group. The athletic point guard comes in at #12 in our Class of 2020 rankings – joining teammates Alexia Smith (#6) and Sakima Walker (#7). Nyam is at her best in the mid-range, creating for her talented teammates and using an outstanding pull-up game to keep defenses honest.
Casey Santoro (Bellevue) – Although Santoro is the shortest player to crack our top 25 list (#18), Bellevue’s explosive point guard may have the most heart. She is a dead-eye 3-point shooter, who also possesses the quickness and physicality to blow by defenders and finish through contact around the rim. She has no problem pressuring full-court on defense and is constantly putting pressure on opponents on both ends of the floor.
Celina Koncz (Chippewa) – As a senior, Koncz led her Chippewa team to the state Final 4 – where they lost a heartbreaker to Waynesville. The 2x Wayne County Athletic League player of the year averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds per game, while shooting over 50% from the floor. The 6-footer, who comes in at #23 in our rankings, can play every position on the floor offensively, while also guarding every position defensively. She would most likely be much higher on this list if she played for a larger high school that plays tougher competition consistently.
