I had a chance to actually see four new teams, Kinkaid, winner of three consecutive state championships in their classification, Second Baptist, Elkins and Episcopal, with the exception of Elkins, all were private schools
Trinity Curry (photo courtesy of Kinkaid athletics)I missed out on the last game which featured St Pius, another private school, going against Bellaire, one of the top programs in Houston Independent School District (HISD) girl’s basketball the last 15 years but I’ll catch them Saturday. One of my goals was to see and grab pics of 2020 Texas Top 100 Trinity Curry, she’s 6’5 and since that grabbed your attention, or definitely should have, the way she grabs rebounds, her progression every season has not gone unnoticed by me but more importantly, college coaches. especially with her 6’8 wingspan. She will certainly be a key in how far Episcopal goes this season, she was playing volleyball by the way, so let me drop a quickie on Kinkaid first
December Stevenson (dribbling) & Corey AlexanderDecember Stevenson showed her versatility by attacking off the dribble as well as finishing strong on the inside. She’s around the magic number of 6’0 and when you add Casey Alexander into the mix, she’s over the magic number, that is an impressive front line, Alexander’s biggest attribute is her power on both ends of the floor and this team has a nice mix of athletic players that just get after it. Watching Kolby Davis add more to her game, she was running the one, and doing it with confidence, but as always, her frame is impressive as she can punish defenders attacking or guarding offensive players, her pull-up from midrange keeps getting better and adding that expands her game
Cailyn Watson, up up and awayEpiscopal and Second Baptist were scrappy and I had not seen Cailyn Watson EVER which is scary because watching her from the far end elevate over defenders and power her way to the basket falls in that “if you can PLAY like she can, I’ll actually ask who you are, sometimes” but this is why rosters are so important, either you get it or you don’t, it’s on you, because her name was butchered at first, but I got it right, I think.
I asked who she played “club or select ball” with, everything is not AAU folks, and she told me she didn’t, she played softball and I believe she excels in that but let me tell you something, she can play basketball at the next level, no ifs ands nor butts and I’m adding her to the Texas Top 100 plus for 2020 just because.
Kaitlyn KollmorgenSecond Baptist had several talented players, point guard set the tone as she attacked at will and hit numerous pull-ups but Kaitlyn Kollmorgen was steady and ready as she’s around that magic number as well. Caught her the Houston Baptist University (HBU) Elite Camp last season, her older sister Taylor plays there, and Kaitlyn put on a show hitting jumpers at Will, well and Grace and just to show me it was not a mirage, she was dropping the mid to long range with regularity as well as attacking the basket and finishing strong after contact. She too will be added to the 2020 Texas Top 100 plus
