Continue ReadingThe rebound can often be the most critical play in a game. It might an offensive rebound that leads to an easy put back or a kick out for a 3 pointer. It might be a defensive rebound that secures the big stop at the end of a game. A small team that wants to run always has to secure that defensive rebound first. Not matter what it is, every team needs that glass cleaner to secure the key boards. Here are the rebounders that will influence the SCC race this year.
- Korrie Hopkins is a 5’11 2021 forward from Southwestern ( Piasa). Korrie is a strong and physical player that boards with the best. She will play an inch or two taller than she is on effort alone. Korrie had a good AAU season playing 17u with the SI Hawks. She competed against bigger players consistently and held her own. Korrie will take that experience and should have a very good junior year.
- Megan Kern is a 6’1 2020 post from Vandalia. Megan led her team in rebounding last year at about 6 per game. She has the capability of having a big senior season. Megan has not played her best basketball yet. If the Vandals are going to take a big step forward, Megan will be a big key.
- Nikya Harston is a 2021 5’10 forward from Hillsboro. Nikya is an excellent athlete that really boards well. She boxes out well and can really go get the ball. Nikya has started off and on for the Hiltoppers and brings the state tourney experience with her. She will need to step up her game this year to keep Hiillsboro in fight for a conference title.
- Megan Hallemann is a 6’4 2020 post player from Greenville. Megan is tall and long so she is very hard to keep off the offensive boards. She can clean up many misses and get easy points for her team. Megan will need to be a real force on the defensive boards this year for the Lady Comets. Megan plays in the middle of their zone and should be in prime real estate for controlling the defensive glass.
- Jillian Hamilton is a 5’9 2022 forward from Pana. Jillian worked her way into the starting lineup at the end of her freshman year. She will be a big part part of the Lady Panthers team this year. Jillian averaged 4.5 rebounds per game last year. She will no doubt go way above those numbers in her sophomore season.
- Sarah DeNeve is a 5’9 2020 forward from Carlinville. Sarah is the top returning rebounder for Carlinville. She is very versatile defensively so she guards multiple positions. Sarah will get offensive boards due to her hustle. She may not average a high amount because of how she is used on defense but Sarah will not give up offensive boards and will always get more than her share when guarding in the post.
These girls will compete hard night and night out for the rebounds. There is a large contingent in this conference of girls in the 5’9-5’10 range that are strong and tough. There will be some real battles. The lane will be no place for the feint of heart in this league. It will be fun to watch.
