Since then, the Owls have not had a winning season in over 30 years – at least until Head Coach Mark Toppi stepped in. Toppi was named Class “C” Coach of the Year as the Owls had an outstanding and unforgettable season in 2018. The Owls had their first league championship in 39 years and first District Championship in their school history. The Owls went undefeated in 2018 and are looking to go even further this season.
Toppi stated that the players are working hard in the off season. For the last six years, the Oscoda Owls have been involved in Angels AAU basketball. This club team runs 6th-12th grade, ensure that the Owls have talented and dedicated players for the future.
The entire girls basketball team for the owls are talented, however, there are two players that standout as leaders on the floor:
Lauren Langley (Sr.) and Macy Kellstorm (Jr.)
Lauren Langley is a two year First Team All-State and First Team North Star League. Langley, one of Michigan’s Top 100 Players was All-Alpena First-Team and Bay City Dream Team. Langley averages 15.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
Macy Kellstorm was North Star League Second Team All-Conference (Big Dipper Division.) Kellstorm averaged 7.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game. “I feel Macy Kellstorm will be the best point guard in the North Star League next season,” said Coach Toppi.
Up-and-Coming Players
Izzy Hulverson (Jr.) averages 6.7 rebounds and 7.5 points per game. Hulverson was 2nd Team All-Conference for the North Star League.
Mercedez Arocha (Jr.) averages 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 points per game.
I asked Head Choach Toppi who were the up-and-coming Owls; his response, Olivia Toppi (So.) played varsity for half of the season. Jessica Montgomery (Fr.), Megan Myles (So.) and Anna Roy (So.) all did great in summer ball (30 games). We had players lifting three times a week with a personal trainer.”
While the Owls are anticipating another winning season, they are challenging themselves by adding Bay City John Glenn and Ogemaw Heights to their schedule. The Owls will also spend Christmas break at the Detroit Roundball Classic with some of the top teams in the state.
