I went through a number of criteria such as motor, flashiness, physicality, and skill as well as just being a fun player to watch. The 14th article in a series of 73 highlights the ten 1A players who I think you need to watch this winter, in no particular order. Tomorrow I’ll have 10 2A players who you have to see this season.
Rachel Leerar – 5’7 PG – 2021 – West Hancock
Leerar is one of the most electric players not just in 1A, but the entire state. She can score the ball and play defense at a high level. Her motor never stops and she is always in “go” mode. One of the top scorers in the state is must watch basketball.
Shateah Wetering – 5’11 SF – 2020 – Montezuma (Photo)
Wetering has an uncanny amount of athleticism combined with strength. Her ability to stretch the floor and shoot it as well as get to the rim makes her really tough to stop. Her perimeter shooting improved a lot this summer so she’s going to be extra dangerous this winter. Committed to Iowa.
Abby Martin – 5’5 PG – 2022 – Lamoni
Probably the best scorer in the state that no one has heard of is Martin. She scored 17.9 points a game last season while making just 24 3-pointers. She has the ability to get to the rim and score really well with her size and always plays so tough. She’s such a fun prospect to watch.
Ella Larsen – 5’9 SF – 2021 – Newell-Fonda
Larsen is one of the elder statesmen on this Newell-Fonda team. Just a junior she is one of the definite leaders on this group. She plays really hard all the time and has basketball IQ that not many others players have. A force on the inside and the outside.
Macy Sievers – 5’8 SG – 2022 – Newell-Fonda
Sievers is also a really fun player to watch but plays a different style than Larsen. She is more of a finesse guard who can play really solid defense and push the ball in transition. Sievers has three more years left and is going to be one of the top 1A players in the state very soon.
Katie Noonan – 5’8 SF – 2020 – Bishop Garrigan
A bit of an overlooked piece for this Bishop Garrigan offense is Noonan. She is one of the best shooters in the state from the perimeter. Last season she shot 41.9 percent from the arc and this season will likely get many more open looks with a legit post that has to be doubled.
Hannah Erickson – 5’7 SG – 2020 – Central Elkader
Erickson scores around 18 points a game but does so in a quiet manner. Last year she shot 202 3-pointers, an average of over eight a game. She can get on a roll where she can’t miss and when she does, you have to watch her nail them.
Lauren Wilson – 5’10 PF – 2022 – Springville
Wilson is one of the top post presences in the state regardless of class. She’s a very hard working post who can stretch it out as well at times. Great rebounder who can simply go and get the ball. Wilson is also one of the top shot blockers in the state.
Haley Hoch – 5’9 PF – 2022 – Twin Cedars
Hoch plays the game really hard all the time. She averaged 12.4 rebounds a game last year and is looking to lead the entire state in rebounding this season. Her scoring should improve and she’s going to be a double-double machine this year.
Jayde Barto – 5’8 SF – 2020 – Kingsley-Pierson
Barto has the ability to do anything that she wants on the floor for Kingsley-Pierson. She plays in the post area a lot but has the ability to easily slide out to the perimeter and shoot it. She’s going to be a player who scores upwards of 20 points a game this year. Committed to Briar Cliff.
