I went through a number of criteria such as motor, flashiness, physicality, and skill as well as just being a fun player to watch. The 16th article in a series of 73 highlights the ten 3A players who I think you need to watch this winter, in no particular order. Tomorrow I’ll have 10 4A players who you have to see this season.
Maggie Phipps – 5’10 SG – 2021 – North Polk
You never know what you’ll get from Phipps, but you always want to watch. One of the most potent scorers in the state is just now heading into her junior year and is always looking to score. She’s one of the most aggressive players in the state which makes her so fun to watch. Phipps plays with a chip on her shoulder and is such a competitive player at all times. Committed to Drake.
Sharon Goodman – 6’2 C – 2020 – Crestwood (Photo: in pink)
Goodman is a player who you want to get your eyes on this upcoming year. She can score at will down in the paint but she also has the athleticism that will sneak up on you. I really enjoy watching her play because I am never sure what she’ll do.A great shot blocker but also a great scorer, Goodman is going to make waves once again this season. Committed to Iowa.
Abbey Holmes – 5’7 SG – 2020 – Algona
Abbey was such a treat to watch over the summer and I have no doubt that will continue into the high school season. She plays with a passion and is a player who does so many things on the floor really well. She’s undersized but makes up for that with the grit she shows on both ends of the floor. You’ll want to watch her as she chases the Okoboji scoring record. Committed to Northern State.
Kallyn Stumbo – 5’8 PG – 2020 – Okoboji
Stumbo committed over the summer, but that doesn’t mean she is going to slack off with her play on the court. In fact, I look for a big year from her because she is out to prove herself. Stumbo is one of those players that can do anything she wants to on the court. She is the perfect definition of a combo guard as she has all the qualities to play both on and off the ball. Committed to Indiana State.
Moriah Prewitt – 5’9 SG – 2021 – Des Moines Christian
Prewitt has gotten so much better over the summer that it’s almost unbelievable. From early April to the end of July she has improved every aspect of her game and has certainly put her name on the map. She’s going to be one of the most dynamic players in the state this year and her drive to get better is evident. Don’t be surprised if she drops a couple 30+ point games this year.
Adrianna Katcher – 5’11 SF – 2020 – Center Point-Urbana
Katcher is one of the best pure offensive players in the state because she has the ability to play so many positions on the floor. She can handle the ball and play the point guard role but she can also slide down into the post at times. Regardless, she’s a dynamic figure who can score the ball with regularity when she’s on a roll. Watch out for her this season. Committed to Southern Illinois.
Ryley Goebel – 5’11 SF – 2022 – Center Point-Urbana
Goebel is Katcher’s running mate on a very solid Center Point-Urbana team. Right now, Goebel is kind of the opposite of Katcher, she’s a defensive minded wing who has the ability to affect almost any play. Her offense is coming along and when she develops a consistent 3-point shot her game will take off. Look for her to have a tremendous sophomore campaign this season.
Ella Collison – 5’9 SG – 2021 – Carroll
Collison is one of the top athletes in the state. She is strong, quick, and very athletic allowing her to do so many different things on both ends of the floor. I really like watching her because the combination of speed and agility is so fun to watch. Carroll should be playing an uptempo style this season and they are going to really prove some doubters wrong.
Annika Headington – 5’7 SG – 2021 – Waukon
Headington is a player who goes 100% all of the time. Watching her in the state tournament last year I was very impressed with her game. Seeing her this summer made me like her game even more. She’s a kid who will put her body on the line for her teammates at all costs. I look for her to have a big year this season with an expanded role.
Kelsey Fields – 6’1 C – 2021 – Creston
Regardless of class Fields is one of the top rebounders in the state. She is a dominant player on both ends of the floor and has the ability to affect the game in so many different ways. I enjoy watching her play because she can get the ball in the basket as well as be a dominant defender. Look for Fields to be near the top of the state in rebounding once again.
